Got The Nerve? Triathlon
74F / 23C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 54m
Overall Rank = 444/625
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 6/13
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45 (same time as always it seems). Not the best sleeping that night. Quickly got everything into the car and grabbed a cup of coffee, banana and breakfast bar. Off to the race.. about a 45 minute drive.
Event warmup:

After putting my stuff together and laid out, I stretched and then did two loops with the bike around the lake. Kept it at an even pace with a couple of small hills. Very excited for the race.
Swim
  • 12m 27s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Positioned myself at the left front of the pack. Went straight out and followed a tight line from buoy to buoy on the inside. Amazingly, I did not drift too much. The Tarzan swim drill in practice helped greatly as I looked up about every 5 strokes and seemed to be right in line.

298 overall out of 600/625 with teams
5 out of 13 in Athena
What would you do differently?:

Go faster??? I don't think there was much here that I could have improved. Whether I should keep using the wetsuit or not is a good question, but I think I did everything right here.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Getting off the wetsuit took the most time and calming myself down.
What would you do differently?:

All in all I think getting the bucket to sit on would help.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 27s
  • 14.8 miles
  • 14.69 mile/hr
Comments:

The race needed to have made some better use of volunteers at some points in the race. Before hitting Pinch Road a truck was trying to cross. I hit the brakes which lost my momentum in getting speed for the hill. This was problematic for me as the hill was enough issue.
What would you do differently?:

Needed more work on steep hills and gear shifting into the other rings.
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Could stand to work on biking when I am weak. I thought this transition was better than I saw the time. I was running before leaving the transition area. Something I hadn't done previously. I was up for this.
What would you do differently?:

Grow taller to be able to put my bike up???
Run
  • 36m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I was proud of my run. Thought I did much better than the past but was disappointed with the time. Probably because previous courses were much flatter than this one. But overall I was pleased with it. Need to work on striding out more.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing running and putting in drills and sprints for speed workouts .
Post race
Warm down:

Little bit of hyperventilation afterwards. Got that under control after a few minutes. HR took a bit to come down. It was a very hot morning.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me... still need more practice. Hills are not my favorite but I made it through them. I will do this race again to compare my times and progress on them.

Event comments:

The course roads should have been fixed for the potholes. Also the volunteers didn't do enough at the key cross sections of the bike (near beginning of course). The road should have been marked off from pedestrians for the bike near the event. Had to slow down for them when coming in. Very frustrating.
