Pre-race routine:

Went to bed at 10:30pm on Friday night
On Friday:
Stayed with friends in Greenville to avoid a long drive to Clemson
Packed the night before
Woke-up at 5am, showered, ate half a bagel with sugar free peanut butter

On Saturday:
Arrived at the event close to 6:30pm
Checked-in, got marked and went back to the car
This was my first race, so I was very nervous. Luckily my friend raced at Clemson and was able to help me out.
We scoped out the transition area and headed to the start area to test the water.
I rented a wetsuit and planned to wear it, but the water was 74 and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by the water temp., but...
MAN 750 m looks scary.

I found an old friend who just got back from the St. Croix tri. He and his girlfried are fast.

I thought it was pretty cool that they played the National Anthem. I immediately felt like this event was much more organized and official than the event I volunteered at in March.

Event warmup:

Stretched and did some jumping jacks
Tested the water, but didn't do too much. I was VERY anxious.
Ate a banana about 20 minutes before go time.
Swim
  • 21m 3s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

I thought I would have a much fast time with the swim. I think I was nervous which made it hard to breath.

It was my first open water swim. I don't want to be too hard on myself, but I should have trained more.
What would you do differently?:

I am a good swimmer, I just need practice in the lake. The water temp. was comfortable to swim in, but I wonder if the wetsuit would have helped me at all. Maybe I'll try the wetsuit next time instead of wasting $40 on the rental. Hey, at least it saved me time in the transiition area.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

I was surprised that T1 was 2 minutes. I didn't feel like I was there that long. I ran from the lake to my rack. I'm proud that I dismounted without any problems, didn't sit down and ran with my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Try to put my cycle shoes and socks on at the same time.
Bike
  • 49h 24m
  • 11 miles
  • 0.22 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

need to train more in cycling (well everything)
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Hey, T2 was shorter than T1, YAY! I was pumped that this was the last event.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I think I could improve time, but I feel pretty good about the transitions for my first time.
Run
  • 36h 01m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11h 34m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I was a little discouraged by the pack of people that were finishing while I was just starting. My calves started to tighten at about a half mile. My legs were definitely fatigued. I was ok on breathing, but I walked some to give my legs a rest.
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't walk. I think with more training, I can get this down a couple a minutes.
Post race
Warm down:

I recovered pretty fast. Drank some gatorade and ate a brownie. A little stiff after the ride home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just call me a training slacker. I did push myself, but I know I have the ability to do much better.

Event comments:

I look forward to racing at Clemson again.

Uh, is it too late to get that wetsuit. The first few strokes were ok, then I think i started to panic in the first 200 meters.
Suit: No wetsuit
Course: For a first timer, it looked very long. I'm glad the longest part was after we turned the first bouey. After I made it passed the second turn bouey, I knew I was going to make it. As for the first 500 meters, I was a little concerned. I actually did the breast stroke a lot b/c i was having a hard time getting enough air with freestyle.

Course: Nice route, a little hilly for me, but I am a beginner. I felt pretty strong in the beginning. the second or third hill was hard. I tried to pick up the pace going down hills. That was fun. I was able to pass a couple people. I liked the scenery and appreciated that traffic was stopped for us. There was great volunteer coverage at turns and throughout the bike and run routes.

Those hills were no joke!
Course: I'm glad they changed the course due to the kayak race. These hills were steep enough for me. I didn't realize there were going to be 4 steady inclines on the run. I was able to push myself at the end and pick up my knees.
