Swim
Comments: Chop and sun made navigation difficult. But I didn't feel exhausted like so often in the past. I did a good job of staying relaxed. Under 2:00 pace is great improvement for me, but still I'd like to chop off some more time here. This time did include a jog up a pretty big hill from the water to transition. What would you do differently?: Site better. I know I was swimming faster when I had a buoy or landmark in site that I could confidently swim toward. I was swinging too wide away from the straight lines of the course. And I no drafting at all. Transition 1
Comments: Had a little trouble getting my headband on and situated right under my helmet. Otherwise went OK. What would you do differently?: Just be generally quicker. I was being a bit too careful with my headband and sunglasses and everything. Bike
Comments: I didn't stick with my pre-race plan at all--my heart rate was in zone 4 for the whole bike basically. But I still felt like I was holding back and taking it a bit easy. I did do a good stop of staying in the aero position, except when I need to stretch out my shoulders a bit (usually chose a small incline to do this). What would you do differently?: Not too much. Backing off to zone 2 at the beginning would be too slow. I could have pushed harder, but I'm afraid that would have hurt my run. Transition 2
Comments: Quickly sprayed some sunscreen all over (but should have done some of this before the bike too). What would you do differently?: Not much. This wasn't bad for taking time to apply sunscreen and clean all the grass off my socks. I again flew by people who had not taken their feet out of shoes before the dismount line. Run
Comments: Tough. I was thankful for the wet towels at the aid stations. The first half was actually pretty fast (though it didn't feel it), but then I progressively slowed. What would you do differently?: I don't know. I don't think there's really a way to make those last few miles much easier. Post race
Warm down: Basically none What limited your ability to perform faster: Fear of blowing up early. Pain, fatigue, and fear of cramping at the end. Event comments: Solid performance without any standout leg. Great first half-iron though. I really felt pretty decent the whole time until half way through the run. And afterward was sore, but not like after a marathon (which I would now say is tougher). For future reference, nutrition was about perfect. Had 4 scoops of Infinit (2 bottles), Shot Bloks, several oz. Hammer gel, 6 Endurolytes, and almost 3 bottles of Gatorade on the bike. Had 3 scoops Infinit (full FuelBelt), 2 Gu packets, 6 Endurolytes, and about 7 cups of water or Gatorade on the run. Last updated: 2007-05-13 12:00 AM
