Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 4am, got a little to eat and drink. Packed up the truck and headed to pickup ABQKid then drove down to Socorro.
Event warmup:

Got in the pool and swam about 75 yard before they kicked me out.
Swim
  • 04m 43s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very quick swim. Venue got changed to this pool and the swim was shortened to only 300 yards. It was a seeded start based on expected swim time. They mentioned that if you thought you were seeded wrong to move up or back in the line. I decided to move up about 20-25 spots as I thought I turned in too slow a time. We went off about every 30 seconds and I'm glad I moved up because I still passed 2 people. It was hard to pass since you went up and back in the same lane, but I just waited for a clearing then went for it. ABQKid said he timed my first 100 and I did it in 1:05, so that was really good for me. When you finished the swim, you had to get out of the pool and run out of the pool area to the transition area parking lot, and that's where the timing mat was, so that time is part of the swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Would have moved up even more spots.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Got in to transition, put on helmet and sunglasses then shoes, took a couple quick drinks, grabbed my bike and headed out. Still not sure why my T1 time was so slow.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure...need to actually practice it to see where I could speed it up.
Bike
  • 34m 1s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Course is rolling with a lot of turns. Couple long hills. Just stayed comfortable and spun up the hills. I passed quite a few people on the up hills and I never got passed. I tried really hard to drink on the bike and almost finished a bottle...that's good for me.
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed a little harder and maybe should have used my aero bottle so that I didn't have to keep sitting up to drink from my bottle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Put on socks so that slowed me down a little.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, went good.
Run
  • 23m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Time was a little slow for me. It was really humid and I was really sweating during the run. I stopped at 2 aid stations and briefly walked as I drank some water. I saw a team mate Nick ahead of me and I tried to catch him, but never did. He told me he kept speeding up because he thought I was going to catch him...good to know since I felt like I was speeding up and not catching him.
What would you do differently?:

Always could have pushed a little harder. Felt I was going at the pace I needed to at the time, so I'm happy with my effort.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for ABQKid to finish then we cheered for team mates and ate some really good sorbet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Been doing mostly long course racing and training, so I can tell I've lost a little speed in the short distances. Need to start doing more speed work with running and biking to get a little faster.

Event comments:

I really like this race. Always well supported and on time. I guess taking 2nd place in my AG helps me like it a little also. ;)
