Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 5:00am, showered, ate a banana and a bagel with peanut butter. I drank water all the way until race time. After checking in upon arrival, I received my body markings. I then went over and setup my transition area. Then I stretched my legs, particular my calves. Went for a light run about 30 minutes prior to the race. Went on a mid-range speed bike ride. Grabbed swim cap & goggles and headed to the beach about 15 minutes prior to start time.
Event warmup:

Everything relatively light.
Swim
  • 19m 2s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swimming needs work. I swam the entire course in a backwards butterfly stroke. I simply could not get into a comfortable swim in the freestyle. I was just taking in too much water.
What would you do differently?:

Master the freestyle in open water before entering a race. The pool just doesn't get it done.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Very happy with this portion of the race. I was prepared.
What would you do differently?:

Run with my bike.
Bike
  • 49m 21s
  • 12.8 miles
  • 15.56 mile/hr
Comments:

The really steep hills were tough but I felt like I road pretty hard.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself and stop trying to conserve so much energy for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Very content with this. Very easy.
What would you do differently?:

Need to sprint out of the bike area and onto the road quicker.
Run
  • 23m 64s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

My strongest segment of the race.
What would you do differently?:

I need to push myself for a faster pace. I have the lungs but I just need to push my legs.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank lots of water and ate a bagel and a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of understanding of how much my body would allow because I was trying to make sure I had enough to finish strong at the end.

Event comments:

Great first race venue for me. I really enjoyed it and it was very well organized.
