Run
Comments: Last year I went out too hard with a shallow warm-up and struggled with my HR the rest of the way. I wanted to prevent that this year and so ran more according to HR, trying to stay zone 3 for the first mile, but the RPE wasn't that high. I should have paid more attention to that. As such, I missed my "pessimistic" goal for the first mile by 15 to 20 secs and was 40 secs slower than last year for the first mile, I had scores of people ahead of me by the 1/2 mile point, at this point people stopped passing me and I was gaining on folks. Before I got to the mile point the leader was already coming back down the other side something like 2:30 - 3 minutes ahead of me. Second mile went well, nice to have that downhill. I passed a few people here and there, but wasn't focusing on that. Third mile was a struggle. Wanted to maintain tempo and just push through for the team and I absolutely positively wanted to beat last years time. I saw 4 people up ahead of me that I believed I could catch. I focused on staying steady and slightly picking up the pace (or at least in my mind I was. With about 1/4 mile to go, I passed the last of "those" 4. Then I set my sights on a) two more b) the finish and c) sub 23. Here I consciously picked it up. I passed one, made it to the finish and at least broke 23, well shy of my goal but improved 20 secs over last year. On the high note, our team finished 3rd out of 10 running teams this year and we took about 2 minutes out of last years time. Also, my wife said she wanted to run it next year so maybe we will have a Co-Ed team instead. She also said she would like to do a Sprint Tri by the end of the year. That will be fun, just have to work out the logistics of the kids and both parents racing on the same day. Training I think we can do. What would you do differently?: I don't know, this was never an issue of the legs being tired, it was just how hard I felt I could push the heart. I think I would take the first mile a little quicker, but where is the balance? Maybe I should have taken RPE more into consideration the first mile. I was pretty happy with mile 2 and mile 3 was what it was, about as strong as I felt I could do. Post race
Warm down: I hit the finish, walked the chute and "plopped" down, had my water, stretched. Had BJ, AJ, and then JJ come by and "help" me stretch - nobody wanted a hug from sweaty dad though :) Changed and got the girls to the line for the fun run. They took off and then grabbed the video and ran after them, that felt good even though I was running in teva's. It was tough, trying to catch up with BJ. What limited your ability to perform faster: Limited speed work. Too slow a first mile. I made a mountain out of the small hill in my mind. Event comments: A fun event that will turn 25 next year. Our team didn't win any door prizes though Last updated: 2007-05-16 12:00 AM

Got up between 5:30 and 6:00, made a smoothie (omitted the protein powder in mine) then some instant oatmeal. Got the rest of my stuff, that I could find together, and loaded the family in the van. A comedy of things forgotten, missing. First race of the year, got to remember how to do this.
Picked up number and shirt, changed and lightly jogged to the mile point, HR higher than expected, it doesn't really look like a hill but we gain 100 feet in that mile and my HR reflects it. Jogged back and threw in a couple of 20 second pickups. Found the rest of the team, then found where the family "homesteaded" for the race. Jogged down past the start with a couple of more pickups just to get the HR going. Hit the starting line about 30 secs before the scheduled start, masses of people still coming from the other direction which delayed the start a few minutes.
