Swim
Comments: Wow the swim really caught me off guard. It wasn't so much of bumping in to people. That part wasn't bad. I believe my problems stemmed from starting off at too quick of a pace. I got out of breath within 50-75 meters and couldn't establish any kind of reasonable breathing rhythym after that. After a while of stuggling with the crawl, I ended up rolling over to my back and back stroking for a good while. I can swim 400 meters no problem, but this performance was really discouraging because I know I can comfortably swim a 2:00/100m pace. I was happy about one thing in my swim: my goggles and nose clip stayed on the entire swim with no incident :) What would you do differently?: Next time I will do some warm-up in the lake. This should remind me of the pace I should be going as well as provide a warm-up for the event in general. Transition 1
Comments: I think T1 went pretty well. I didn't forget to put anything on and had no problems finding my spot. The night before the race I laid everything out on my transition towel and thought through the order that I was going to put things on and take them off for each transition. That practice definitely paid off. Also, I rolled up my cycling socks so that I could slip them on my toes and roll them the rest of the way up my foot. I knew it would be a stuggle putting socks on wet feet. What would you do differently?: Run faster to my bike. I was so winded from the swim that I did a slow jog instead of a sprint to my area. Also, I need to practice actually doing transitions rather than just standing in front of my towel and thinking it through. Bike
Comments: If you were going to pass someone in the turns it got a little difficult. Overall, though, I think the number of turnsshelped out because it slowed some of the faster guys down. I was on a road bike so I felt I could negotiate the turns and re-accelerations better than someone in their aerobars on their tri bike. I was happy with my pace. I was shooting for an average of 20 mph and I got that. I peaked out at 26 mph in one of the last straightaways. What would you do differently?: I sill need more training time on my bike. I was happy with today's performance. A goal by the end of the summer is to be able to maintain an average closer to 23 mph. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. My spot was kind of a haul from the cycling entrance into the transition area, so I had a ways to run with my bike. I got all my cycling gear off no problem and put my running shoes on. I ride my bike with mountain biking shoes, so I was able to run without a problem. What would you do differently?: I still need practice jumping off my moving bike. I come to pretty much a complete stop before I dismount. Run
Comments: I am not a fan of running on sidewalks. But I guess I survived, so it couldn't have been too bad. I didn't hit my goal pace of 7:00/mile for the run. Kind of disappointed in that because running is my strongest event. For a majority of the run I kept pace with another guy who was in an older age group. I think my slow time had something to do with my poor swim. I did the back stroke a good bit and used my legs to propel myself more than I normally would have in doing the crawl. What would you do differently?: Do more bricks in training to get used to the change from cycling to running. Have a better swim. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and grabbed some water. My wife and some friends were there to greet me at the end, so that was fun. Went to the tent where people were giving complimentary massages and got my calves and hamstings all rubbed down and stretched. It was my first massage ever, and let me tell you it felt good. I will stretch my legs more tonight. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim, the swim, the swim! Everything else was acceptable. Event comments: Good race for my first triathlon. I didn't like running on the sidewalks, but as I said earlier, I survived. Every volunteer was extremely nice. I liked the setup for the arrival of the participants. As you walked to the transition all participants were marked, and then there was bike/helmet check immediately after at the entrance to the transition area. There was no guesswork as to where I should be and when. Last updated: 2007-05-17 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:15, ate a blueberry bagle and drank some apple juice, loaded up the bike and hit the road. When I got there I ate a half a Snickers marathon bar. It was pretty gross tasting. Other than that, pretty uneventful pre-race.
I didn't do much warm up for this event, although I wished that I would have.
