Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4 am, jumped in the car poptarts and diet coke in tow and drove over to Wendi's. Packed up the new princess SUV and off we went. Braided my hair on the way. Got there at about the perfect time. No lines no waiting. Got the WORLDS WORST body marking job. I mean really it looked like I was mauled by a sharpie and completely illegible. Helped out some people who were obviously first timers. Braided Wendi's hair (she may never do another race without pigtail french braids) Hung out with the BTers (Jeff, Jeff, Jessica, Brian, Wendi) Never did really see anyone else. A couple newbies from the hospital were doing the race but we didn't really ever see them. Used my pre-exercise inhaler 45 minutes before race start
Event warmup:

Umm I THOUGHT about swimming....but then I didn't

Started towards the front. Its was LOW LOW LOW tide and you could probably have walked the swim if you wanted to. Could see the bottom the whole way ICK!!! I felt awesome on this swim. I sighted well, navigated well and even drafted a little. Found clear water right away. 45 seconds slower than Danskin 2 weeks ago but I think this that swim was a bit short and perhaps this one a bit long. My actually swimming time was probably closer to 8:04 and the official non chip time was a little more but whatever. I suck at running. I know this. I do not need my swim time to include running. I feel really good about it and feel like I swam well.
What would you do differently?:

swim faster :)

Short run across the beach. Had a great rack position. Threw my helemt and glasses on and off I went. Bike shoes on bike. I was quick in transition but I hit my watch right as I came out of the water so the time includes the little run across the beach.
What would you do differently?:

Take a puff of my inhaler before starting the bike.

****My bike computer and everyone elses says the course was a touch long as posted....if it was 15 miles then speed is 19.86 MPH*****

At any rate.....was a little out of breath and wheezing the first 3 miles or so. Started picking people off. Was trying to stay above 20 MPH. there was a bit of wind on the way out but I was OK with it as that meant tail wind on the way back!! Start looking for the lead female.......one....two.....I was about 7th or 8th female before the turn. Make the turn CRAP theres a PACK of women behind me. See Jess in a little bit. NO ONE IS PASSING ME UNLESS ITS A BTER. The pack starts to attack and we do some cat and mouse for a while. See Wendi. Do the cat and mouse thing for about 4 miles then we catch a nice tail wind and I just drop the hammer and do the last 2-3 miles of the bike at about 23-24 MPH felt AWESOME. I really wanted to be under 45 minutes but I'll take 45:19
What would you do differently?:

take a puff of my inhaler in T1 so I can get up to speed faster and not waste 3 miles catching my breath. I usually do the feet ont he shoes thing and after I unvlecored my left shoe teh whole shoe came out of the pedal...OOPSSS. Clipped it back in and took my foot out.

OUCH...first time ever in a race that my legs felt bad off the bike. ewww. Racked easliy. Sat down on the ground and put on my socks and shoes. Grab hat, race belt INHALER and off I go. I kind of walked out of T2 and started running WHEW legs OK...well as Ok as they get for me anyway

Felt really strong coming out of T2...took a hit off my inhaler. I'm such a poor runner I kinda gotta do my own thing. Made it to the 1/2 mile marker in about 5 minutes...WTF that is practically a sprint for me!! Just after that the first girl in my age group passes. OK I know I can't get her....since its and out and back I start checking ages on peoples calves.......Make it to the turn..I'm in SECOND!!

Unfortunately I know there is this sooper tiny runner chick with like 2% body fat in my age group. How skinny is she? She was racing in a sports bikini and the top was so loose on her the elastic at the bottom of the sports bra was away from her body and loose. Have I said lately I hate f**ing runners?

So anyway I digress.....I'm chipping away at it the best I can. 2nd place 2nd place 2nd place. Stoopid freaking runner chick passes me at about 2.5 mile. Insert bad words. Well I'm still 3rd its ok. Then tragedy....42 YO woman passes me with like 200 yards left....DAMN. I try to catch her and she speeds up. I'm running as hard as my stoopid busted up legs will carry me. I slow a bit....she slows but not as much as me. I try to catch her last 100 yards....nothing doing my body won't go any faster. Edged out of hardware by 16 seconds. :(

Despite all that it was a good run for me.
What would you do differently?:

No idea. Did the best I could. Its still pitiful. I'm just so not a runner. I'm really annoyed at being edged out the last 200 yards. Sucks. Actually the runner chick only beat me by less than 2 minutes. I guess I gotta learn to bike FASTER so I have more of a cushion going into the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Sulked. Packed up transition. Sulked. Jess got 4th too. I did PR by 6:30 ish but I'm still pissed about getting edged out the last few yards of the race. Classic Ott performance 3rd on the swim by seconds, 1st on the bike great transitions and then I have to put one foot in front of the other. Pitiful.

Waited for Wendi to get her Athena award and we all went to breakfast

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Um lets see......same thing as EVERY RACE..I suck at running

Event comments:

This is a good race. Someday they may get timing chips even. Great race for first timers. Small but getting bigger. Jeff, Jeff, Jess and Brian and I went tubing after breakfast. We are gonna miss Jess when she moves away :(
