Swim
Comments: I'm not thrilled with the swim, but I did OK. I'm not used to swimming in a wetsuit, so my arms were not happy. What would you do differently?: Line up better! Seriously, I can swim, but I'm not giving myself a chance by getting in the back of the pack. Transition 1
Comments: I was pretty slow in T1. For the first time, I felt wobbly coming out of the water and then I had to fight with the suit. And I had to put on a jacket because it was so cold. Lost lots of time here. What would you do differently?: Race on a day that was much warmer and not need a suit or a jacket. :) Bike
Comments: About 2 miles in, my quads were crying. It usually takes me a good 7 miles to get a groove. Have to figure a way to change that. I did OK, even though I wanted to go harder. For some reason my legs just wouldn't. About 1/3 of the course was into a headwind and that sucked. Found some of the little gears on that section. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to get my groove earlier. I also think I needed more nutrition. Five miles in I was starving. And of course, race on a day when it's sunny, 75* and no wind. Transition 2
Comments: Faster than T1. My legs were so dead off the bike and running in bike shoes is kind of tough anyway. Luckily it was a small transition area. What would you do differently?: I should have ditched the jacket. Even though I was still wet and cold, I think I would have been fine without it. Run
Comments: My plan was to walk the whole thing, but I just couldn't do it. I ran the first 5 min to loosen up my legs. Then I started alternating run 3/ walk 2, or something like that. I managed to keep that up for the whole time. Mile 3 was rough. I haven't run in so long that I just didn't have the endurance. I saw so many people pass me and that was tough. It's OK though; at least I did it. What would you do differently?: Aside from not being injured, nothing really. I'm pretty happy with the run. Post race
Warm down: Through the chute, chip off, find the food. I was starving when I finished. After a bagel and a banana, I felt much better. What limited your ability to perform faster: Injury and lack of strength. Two things I can work on. Event comments: I will put this one on my calendar for '08. Great courses and well-organized. As we woke up this morning, I wasn't too sure about this race. Yesterday I did the OWS clinic at the lake. The water was cold, but the sun was out yesterday and not too bad. Today was another story. Breakfast was yogurt and cereal. On the way down there it *poured* rain. Kept raining until about 8am.
Because of my leg and all the trouble I have had with it lately, I just wanted to finish. Not being last would have been a bonus. The plan was to go hard on the swim and the bike and just let the run happen. Actually, I had plans to walk a lot of it.
I hadn't planned any big warm-up, so I wasn't too stressed out. I ate my banana and was ready to get my transition set up. I picked a spot in the back with several other first-timers. Yea, I know I did two last year, but I'm still a newbie. I got on the bike to spin the gears a bit and make sure all was right. After the race meeting, I got in the water to get used to the temp and the suit. Actually, my feet felt warmer in the water than out in the air.
(Times are my estimate and include transitions. Will fix when the official results are posted.)
