Pre-race routine:

Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. Got my tri suit on and drank a cup, and looking up, i noticed i was late.

Racked my bike and grabbed my cap, made the bus in seconds flat, Found my way to the swim and had a gu, The PA man spoke and i went into a dream
ahhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhh...

Event warmup:

None.. just tried to jog a little to get the HR ready.
Swim
  • 27m 51s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Reluctantly in the water at the starting line, Heartbeat pumping and thumping in time. The watch guy yells, the arms go up. Churning and burning, I swim for the doc. I deftly maneuver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank. Reckless and wild, I swim through the turns. my prowess is potent and secretly stearn.

and eventually, I finished.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.. good swim. More Current would be nice, but given that the water was the same for everyone, I was happy.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

well, I pretty much crapped the bed on this one, but my time is actually decent.. what's up with that? I forgot to put on my bike shoes and remembered half way down the aisle.. so I go back, rerack, put shoes on, then head out.. all still under a minute? Cool.
What would you do differently?:

Shoes.. I need shoes to ride. Doesn't work as well without them. During the off season, the shoes go on the bike and I learn to mount and dismount like the good people.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 24s
  • 25.8 miles
  • 20.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I loved this bike.. it just hit me the right way. I'm tired of two lane roads where you can't see more than 100 yards ahead of you. This was the polar opposite. Dramatic views of the upcoming hills, and the mountians in the distance.. wrapped in a light fog, but you could still see them. I rode pretty well. Took me a bit longer to get up to speed than usual. I attribute that to my legs not being at peak. Hit some high speeds on the course. Over 40mph twice.

I dropped my chain around mile 15. That took about a minute off my time total, in lost momentum etc.

I only took one Gu the entire race. At the beginning of the bike. I forgot to take it at the end of the bike or on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not shift to the small front ring in the middle of a large hill.. Stay big.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

and this transition takes 1:05.. ?? well, I got stuck behind some dude who lost his way and decided to stop in the middle of my row to look around.

No socks this time.. new shoes, took a chance. It paid off.
What would you do differently?:

Run over the guy who stopped.. i mean I've been swum over for being slower than the guy behind me.. What's the difference?
Run
  • 48m 4s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I love running.. it just felt so good to be out there where I am most comfortable. Was not my fastest run, but was a strong one. Legs felt great. Overall, no complaints.

I'm not sure I felt energy depletion or not. As I mentioned earlier, the only nutrition I had during this entire race was one Gu at the beginning of the bike. One at the beginning of the run would have probably made a little difference. I simply forgot to grab it. Mental error.
What would you do differently?:

lose 5 pounds, and gel more often.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished and headed over to the girls who were being watched by some NAMSC folks. Had a good time hanging out with everyone watching everyone else come in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was not peaked for this race, and am in the middle of IM distance training. Also, weigh 170.. I need to drop 5 pounds to get back to my most efficient weight.

Event comments:

Great race. Highly recommended. The course changes were perfect. I think they will work out the kinks of the start, and come up with a better solution to get the better athletes on the course first.. Time trial means someone always has to start at the back, and even go last, but the better athletes should get to go first. I don't much appreciate the fact that all I have to look at during my race is men in my age group.. I need more incentive than that.

One additional note: I qualified for Age Group Nationals in Portland Oregon next June.. whew, don't need to worry about doing that at St. Anthony's next year. :)
