Swim
Comments: 217/539 women = top 40%. Course seemed a little long, but that may have been mostly because it actually was longer for me with the late start. Water was refreshing; I felt strong. At least I got to pass some people - but got passed by some of the next wave of guys rounding the final buoy. Downside of going the VIP route is not being able to gauge relative position out of the swim, since I couldn't tell by looking at the bikes left on the racks. I knew I was behind where I wanted to be, but had no idea to what extent. Well, after looking at the split times, I'm confused! I posted a great time, which doesn't make sense, given that I started late and I know at least 3 guys passed me out of the water. There aren't three guys who posted times more than 5 minutes faster than mine in the next wave, so I'm not sure what gives. But I'll take the time! What would you do differently?: Pay more attention to the announcements, and not just rely on my watch! Transition 1
Comments: Seemed to go OK - my rack was close to the swim entrance, but a ways to the bike exit, so had to run in bike shoes for a while. Bike
Comments: 207/539 women = top 38.4%. Felt really comfortable on the bike - my watch showed I was averaging 20 MPH all around Fiesta Island, but also showed the course was over 10 miles. I wasn't as fast on the rest of the course, but it was nice and flat. Kip passed me in the first mile - his wave was right after mine. If my T1/T2 times were a couple minutes each, that would put me at a 16.8 MPH pace over 10.3 miles - makes sense What would you do differently?: Probably push harder, especially since it was flat. Be more confident in cornering and not slow down quite as much. Transition 2
Comments: Was able to take my feet out of my shoes before dismounting, so I could run from the dismount to my rack, which was at the far end of the transition area. The asphalt was wet, so my socks got a little wet, but it wasn't a problem. Run
Comments: 320/539 women = top 59.4% Felt pretty good - went out a little too fast, but it was OK. The little hills going over the Ingraham St. bridge slowed me down some, but overall it was fine. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Post race
Warm down: Got a 5 minute massage (freebie with the VIP entry), Had half a bagel and some water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Missing swim start. I was initially disappointed when Kip told me my overall time (1:21), since I was shooting for 1:15. I figured I lost at most 2-2.5 minutes with the late swim start, but the extra mile on the bike also added another 3-3.5 minutes, so I actually wasn't far off my projected pace. And the next finisher in my age group was more than 3 minutes ahead, so my swim start didn't affect my age group placing. Event comments: A fun race on a beautiful San Diego fall day! woke up at 5:15, had two pieces of toast & gatorade. left at 5:50, arrived around 6:20
took my time getting dressed to swim, using the bathroom, etc., only to realize my wave (11) was going off 5 minutes earlier than my watch said (was supposed to be 7:40, but the math works out to 7:35 with the first wave at 6:45). My watch said 7:35 and I just got in the water at the boat ramp when the horn went off. Not sure how far back I was from the start, but I'm guessing 100 yards or more - probably 2-2.5 minutes. Oh, well, it gave me a nice clear swim path for awhile! I checked my watch when I got home and it seemed OK - maybe I was just out of it?!
