Pre-race routine:

Late night snack the night before (10:30, while watching the weather). Had a gel and water in the morning, and was supposed to have a granola bar on the bus but forgot(!) to bring it. Left it in the car. Ugh. I could have used those calories on the race.
Event warmup:

None to speak of. Had found Emily (Bikergrrl) at the bus, but then lost her after the portapotties - how were we to know there would be no sign for the 10 minute milers? Walked up to my friend's house who lives at the start and dropped off my top, jogged up and down her driveway for a minute, then got into the mass of people for the start. Stopped along the side as people were walking up to the start for a while to see if I could find Bikergrrl, but eventually gave up and decided to run my own race. Glad I did, too, or I would have had to pass even more people in the first 2 miles!

Comments:

I felt pretty good on the run until mile 10, and I did a good job of backing off after mile 3 when I was running with a girl who was taking me too fast. She was very nice, but didn't really know her pace - said she was aiming at 10s, but was running 9:00 with ease. In pants. I don't know how.

I had great luck finding folks to run with - met a couple of very nice girls, and one woman I actually knew somewhat - she was a teacher at my son's old school.

Mile 10 is the last stretch of London Road into downtown, and there are fewer spectators and you're running on the cobblestones. Things started to get a little tougher then for some reason. I think I was running out of gas. I'd taken a gel after Lemon Drop hill, and that helped, but I was really missing my early morning caloric intake, I think.

I feel pretty good about my decisionmaking, my pacing, and all that, so it was a good race for me. It was only after the race that I started to make questionable decisions.

What would you do differently?:

Eat something in the morning!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stood in line for a few things, and got really, really hot. Cramps (the feminine kind) came on with a vengeance. Couldn't tell if my stomach was cramping up or if it was just the other kind, but I was a ball of misery in my mid-section.

Finally decided I had to a)hit the medical tent and get some advil and b) get out of there, slowly, stopping for rest breaks because I was too, too hot. Had one volunteer worried enough about me that she grabbed a medical guy - he walked me to the tent, and I got what I needed and went on my way. Was able to watch some of the marathon finishers at this point... helped me put how hot I was feeling in perspective! Still, it would have been nice to have somebody with me to help me out after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not having enough early morning caloric intake.

Event comments:

This is a great race. I would definitely do it again, and hope I get the chance.
