Swim
Comments: In last wave. Knew I'd be one of last out of water. Makes race much less fun because the majority of pack is gone by the time I get out of T1 and I'm pretty much by myself. Waited a little so everybody else could go off...maybe 10 seconds. Still think I started too fast; hung pretty close to group for maybe first 100m but was way out of breath and had to slow way down, back float, breast stroke, etc. to catch breath. Even with all this, I still beat my last 400m tri swim by over a minute. What would you do differently?: Start slower, maybe wait another 10 seconds? Felt much better in open water than last year, when I panicked and basically forgot how to do anything more than dog paddle. Be being out there with so many people still makes me uncomfortable. Have to be more relaxed. Transition 1
Comments: Time is estimated, based on my stopwatch, bike computer, run estimate, etc. Had top of wetsuit off right out of water, bottoms came off pretty quick too. Lost some time drying feet, but socks went on easily enough. Attaching race belt and undoing sunglasses, etc. all contributed to time. What would you do differently?: Probably not a whole lot. Maybe cut back on drying feet? Bike
Comments: Did not need to change gears often. Rode in maybe three different gears the entire ride. Lots of chain rub; doubt if it cost me much speed. What would you do differently?: Get bike adjusted. Figure out how to get a little faster. Transition 2
Comments: Felt fairly quick. Shoes were off and on without much difficulty. Jogged out. Time is estimated, but it was pretty quick. What would you do differently?: Maybe grab something to drink, down a gel or something. Not much, really. Run
Comments: Tried to start slow so I could build up and run faster. Think I pulled it off but felt out of breath too soon, and ran that way rest of race. I did beat 10-minute pace per mile. Time above is estimated, might have been a few seconds faster or slower, but is based on time I ran away from the bike. What would you do differently?: Not too much. Maybe start even slower so I can have more at end. Post race
Warm down: Not much...walked around a little bit. Felt a slight twinge in groin, which worried me at the time, but seems gone now. Did a little stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inability to swim or bike very fast!! Not sure how to improve there. Event comments: Liked the race location/venue; not sure why more people weren't entered. Unfortunately, some of the race organizer's people were in a serious accident on the way down and the van with the timing equipment and chips was overturned, with the timing equipment lost or destroyed. Fortunately, nobody seriously hurt. They were unable to post race splits as a result so my times are based on what I saw on my stopwatch and bike computer. Hate being in last wave; knew I'd be near last out of water, which means I ran the rest of race pretty much by myself because the majority of the "pack" was gone. Last updated: 2007-05-27 12:00 AM

Found a nice transition spot next to a fence rail that I could sit on when getting out of wetsuit, changing shoes, etc. Set everything up nicely. Drank a bottle of water waiting on start, walked around, ate a gel probably 15 minutes before swim start.
Did a 2-3 minute jog. Swam a little before my wave went off to get over open water concerns.
