Swim
Comments: Horrible swim. Suffered some kind of mental block and was absolutely incapable of making myself stick my face in the water and stroke. 95% was done backstroking, breaststroking and dog paddling. Embarrassing! Kept telling myself I need to start swimming but I wasn't able to do it. Started out with breasttroke because I didn't want to tire myself like last time, but then was never able to get going. Afterwards, Teresa asked, "Why didn't you swim? I know you can." All I could do was look at her and say, "I have no idea. I just couldn't." What would you do differently?: F'ing swim!!! Trying to logic it out, the only explanation is an issue or fear of open water swims. I'm very slow even in the pool but I can at least go 500-800m continuous. In all three of my tri swims I've been unable to put together any kind of consistent, actual swimming. Transition 1
Comments: No wetsuit. Slow because I sat down to pull on my socks and shoes. Initially put one of my socks on upside down! What would you do differently?: Not much...I felt pretty efficient although I obviously wasn't. Ride without socks? Maybe not sit down to put on shoes? Bike
Comments: Felt pretty comfortable on the bike and never felt as if I was about to lose it or hit a wall. Amazing difference to actually be out in the midst of everybody (unlike Belleplain, where I did the bike leg practically by myself). I was worried about so many racers making it difficult to move around but had no trouble. Very well managed bike course, with cars at a minimum and plenty of room to pass and, on a couple of occasions, actually ride three to four wide. Toward the end, I did start getting a little sore in the back and crotch. Personal record on What would you do differently?: Maybe move around on the seat a little more to keep from getting achy and sore later. Transition 2
Comments: Unstrapped shoes before bike dismount so I could kick them off quickly. Ran behind the rack instead of two the front. Kept bumping my head on the rack trying to move out from under with my shoes (still had helmet on). Sat down to put on shoes, tightened the laces on the right. Sucked down some GU2o. Ran out without any issues and got out onto the run course...legs were fine. Overall, pretty much as expected. What would you do differently?: Maybe not put running shoes so far under. Maybe not sit down to remove and put on shoes. Run
Comments: Another PR on the run, which was pretty surprising since I never felt too comfortable. I wanted to take four or five minutes to shake legs out and then pick up the pace but I never felt able to pick up pace until after 11 or 12 minutes. I think first mile took about 11 minutes. By two miles I was at about 20 minutes. Did finally step it up the last quarter mile or so but never really pushed it hard like I do in speed work because it just didn't feel like I had any reserves left. What would you do differently?: Start stepping it up a little further out. Hard to find too much wrong since it was a PR on a 5K for me. Post race
Warm down: Rolled top of suit to catch a breeze and walked around a bit drinking a bottle of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental problems on the swim. Might could've pushed slightly harder on the bike but I felt like it was a good ride. On the run, legs and wind felt pretty much close to max. Event comments: Great event. CGI really seems to have their stuff together. Last updated: 2007-05-27 12:00 AM

Not much...just setting up transition and checking everything, then going to swim start to calm nerves by getting into the water.
