Comments:

Ok, so Sue and I start out together at the back as usual. Lately we haven't been at the very back, but as soon as the timer guy yelled "runners go!", there we were left at the very back. And guess what was directly behind us? Yep, a police car bringing up the rear. Now I am having flashbacks to the snowy race in March where I was "pursued" by the police car the entire race. Fortunately within the first 1/4 mile or so there was a short but rather steep hill. Sue and I passed a half dozen or so people on this hill so at least we weren't dead last anymore.

The two of us stayed together and chatted until just before mile 2 and then Sue went on ahead. I just wanted to maintain a relaxed pace that felt like I wasn't pushing too hard because of my back injury the week before. I felt really good just motoring along. During the last 1/2 mile, I passed a guy from the 50-55 age group. Boy did he have a nice tan. I kept thinking how did he get that tan so early in the season? My legs are still lily white. Oh well. I thought I was passing him pretty good, but with about 50 yards to go, I could hear footsteps behind me. No way was someone I just passed going to pass me back, so I turned it up a notch (or two or three) and held on to the finish line. heehee!

My first real run since hurting my back 7 days ago. During my warm up jog, my back felt stiff and tight. Worried about how it would feel after 3 miles, but everything loosened up and felt better and better.
What would you do differently?:

Not hurt my back the week before.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank water. Sue got 2nd in our age group and I took 3rd. Sue's husband Dave took 3rd in his age group so it was a fun race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injured + the usual

Event comments:

This year's race was much more organized than last year's because someone who knows road racing organized it. Also the route was changed for the better. Last year, it was suppose to be a 5k, but I drove the route afterwards and it was just short of 3 miles. This year, it was a true 5k. A small race with the usual local crowd. Part of our local grand prix series.
