Pre-race routine:

Up fairly early, ate oatmeal with walnuts and some bread and pb. The dog got some bread w/pb as well :) Drank some water through the morning. A little bit of Infinit as the start got closer.
Event warmup:

Swam a bit, tried not to swallow lake water.
Swim
  • 08m 32s
  • 880 yards
  • 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty good swim I thought. I could have been a little faster at the start, but oh well. I picked it up after I rounded the first turn. There was a bit of a run from the exit to TA.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace a bit more.
Transition 1
  • 06m 56s
Comments:

I cannot think of anything to explain this T1 time. I'm very confused because I ran into TA, slipped on the bike shoes and helmet and was off-2 minutes at the most. I wish I'd started my stupid watch. The only thing I can think of is that we had a short run from swim to T1 and a little bit more of a run from TA out to the bike mount area...maybe all that combined was almost 7 minutes, but that seems awfully long. Really Long.
What would you do differently?:

I thought I had a great T1. I don't think the time is representative of my actual transition.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 26s
  • 18.6 miles
  • 15.41 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really happy with my pace, considered that when I rode on Tuesday, I averaged 14 mph. I think I felt better on the second loop that I did on the first. Tried to keep my legs loose, and pedal at high cadence when I had the chance, since I was working so hard on the hills. Hands started to get a little numb/sore by the end. I was gripping the bars pretty tightly on the climbs and downhills (max 45 mph-whew!).
What would you do differently?:

Get a compact crank or granny gear. Work on nutrition more. Toward the end I felt like I was going to throw up. It was a great feeling ;) Work on focusing more on keeping the cadence up. I tend to let my mind wander, and really drop my pace.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

This was okay. See-the times just don't make sense. I know I was slower in T2 than T1. Anyway, the racks were crowded and I made it back right as the guy racked next to me did, and he had his stuff all over so I had to go around to the other side and rack my bike. Not really upset about it though since it was his first tri.
I forgot my race belt, but saw the race director on the course, and he said I didn't need to go back for it.
What would you do differently?:

Get some lace locks or something. I feel so slow when I'm sitting down lacing up my shoes. Remember the race belt.
Run
  • 30m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good, surprisingly. I passed a few people, and was in a happy state of mind. This was the first run part of a tri where I didn't have to walk, and felt good the whole time. At times, I did feel like I was giving a harder effort and wondered if I should slow down or walk, but I just tried to keep it consistent. Yea!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Talked to some folks I knew. Tried to eat, but wasn't really hungry.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ha. My slow ass.

Event comments:

I thought they did a good job, swim start was a little slow, but not too bad, they did move people through pretty quickly. Don't know what's up with the timing. My age group results look differnt from the overall results, although both have the same final time...so something is going on there. Other than that, good race. I'll do it again next year!

I guess the timing mat was right at the bleachers. So, the swim time started when I got in the water and stopped right when I got out-it didn't include any running to TA or anything. That's all I can think of to explain my long T1 time.
Suit:
Course: Course was in the shape of an inverted triangle. Time trial start, which I thought would be a pain, but didn't take that long. They moved people through pretty quickly. The only thing that was a little sketchy was getting into the lake. There was a wall around the edge of the lake by the main buildings, so they had to come up with a way to get us into the water. They put bleachers down in the water that we had to use to carefully step down into the water. It was pretty slippery. My husband said he saw several people bust their butt, which wouldn't have been a fun way to start (or finish). I did like that I could do a little dive off the bleachers to get going. Maybe if they put some sort of grip tape on them next year it would help.
