Swim
Comments: swim is always my weakest link, however I was happy on this one for a couple of reasons. This was the first swim ever in a race where I didn't have any nervousness at all. This was time trial start and when my spot came up, it was like "oh I guess I better go swim." Very calm in and I actually passed some people. That is unheard of for me. The other cool thing was that the water was clear. This made the possibility of being kicked, much less because you could actually see feet. I did have a close call when somebody coming back totally veered into the out lane and was pretty much going perpendicular to the course. I yelled out to them, but they paid no attention. I swam until my knees hit. What would you do differently?: Just get faster. I have made great progress in my swim, but there is much room for improvement. By the way, this course must be short, because there is no way that pace is correct, but we will let that be our little secret. Transition 1
Comments: pretty long run up the beach, although I think a lot of that was timed as part of swim. I'm fairly happy with this time. This was my first race in a wetsuit and got it off pretty quickly without trouble (thanks bodyglide) I decided to sockless on this ride, to save a little time in transition. What would you do differently?: not much. Just practice a bit to get faster Bike
Comments: Ok someone forgot to tell me that this course was hilly, with a couple of beasts! Really I had never done this course and didn't know what to expect. Overall I was pretty happy, given the course, with this ride. Passed lots of people and was passed a little bit too. This included Sneaky Pete who let a big EEEEEEAAAAAWWWWWWW! coming up behind me as I white knuckling down a speedy little hill. Actually it was much appreciated and good to see him out there. The up hills became an added challenge because of the number of people going slow were spread out all over and stopping to get off their bikes and walking. I almost did a tip-over at what point trying to avoid someone stopping. What would you do differently?: Actually the downhills were my downfall. I have gotten much more agressive on my bike, but become too tentative on the down hills. When I hit about 30, I start looking for the brakes. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Ok the official results had me at 21:42, at a 8:44 pace. The numbers I have listed are from my Garmin. I know my body and I know my pace and I KNOW I was not going a 8:44 pace. I was actually going to protest and then realized how stupid that would be. I'm here for the fun of it. I know I gave it my best. I was really planning on blowing this one out because it was so short, but someone stuck hills between me and that idea. I don't believe I was passed on this run at all. What would you do differently?: I would have gone a bit harder. I think I had a little bit more to give. Most disappointed in this leg. Post race
Warm down: walked around a bit. Found my family which didn't arrive until AFTER I finished. Out of 7 tris I have done, my wife has come to three. This the second time out of total of those 3, that they missed my entire race. Should I be getting a complex? Cheered on some of the Donkeys and my friend Kyle coming in on the Oly. What limited your ability to perform faster: With my upcoming HIM, speed work has taken a back seat. Also I need to do a whole lot more hill work. Event comments: This was a late entry to my race schedule. I am glad I did it. This a great race at a great venue. I would highly recommend it. It was great to see all the Donkeys out there again. Stayed in a hotel with the family. Got up about 4:15, after a restful, but short 4.5 hours of sleep. Had three bagels and a banana. Packed up and my wife drove me to the race site about 5:30. They returned to go back to bed and returned later (more on that below) My bike number and run number were different. I wanted to make sure that this wasn't a mistake (it wasn't) Got body marked and set up my transition.
really nothing. walked around a bit looking for fellow donkeys. I used to be insulted when someone yelled out to me "hey donkey", but now its a welcome sound.
