Swim
Comments: Swim went well. I had a comfortable pace, diddn't veer too far off, and made good progress. I may have wandered a bot far to the outside in the first part, but made up for it later in the race. What would you do differently?: Not much. Swim was my strongest section. Still could speed up some. Transition 1
Comments: Did better, but perhaps dawdled a bit here. Overall OK What would you do differently?: Do everything faster. Bike
Comments: Definitely my weakest section. It was actually OK for me, as I spent the least time on the bike in training. However, it was clearly my Achilles heel. Funny story; during a particular hill climb, I was going so slow that someone actually asked me if I was OK. Now, I wasn't grimacing or even feeling bad, I was just slow enough to cause this other guy to worry. At that moment I said to myself "I REALLY have to work on the bike more". What would you do differently?: I really need to bring my biking up. I also need to work more on bike tuning, as my chain kept slipping all race. No excuses, though, I need to put more time in the bike training. Transition 2
Comments: OK transition, wasn't moving at break-neck speed, but not too slow either. Learned from my previous race and double-knotted my running shoes. What would you do differently?: Um, move faster (seems to be a recurring theme here) Run
Comments: Actually, given my pre- race ITBS issues, I was most worried about the run. Fortunately, those worries turned out to be unnecessary. No pain in the ITBS throughout the race. That just left my chronic slowness to hold me back. Actually, given the lack of run training I could do for the past 3 months, I am content with my performance. I need to get faster, but at least now I can do that without pain. What would you do differently?: Pacing felt about right for where my running was. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the beer cart from the golf course to stop for me :) Post race
Warm down: Walking, light stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of bike training, recent ITBS issues, being slow. Event comments: Great race. As always, well-organized and well run. Transition area was fine, too. As far as nutrition; since this was my first Olympic, this is also the first race where I had to worry about nutrition. I actually was quite happy with my choices. The Powerbar gel every 30 min on the bike kept my energy levels high, and I didn't bonk on the run. Overall, since my goal was to finish under 3 hours, and I actually finished under 2h 30 min, I was pretty pleased. I actually think I liked this race better than the sprints. I will probably try more Olys in the future. Last updated: 2007-06-03 12:00 AM

The usual. 2 bagels and OJ for breakfast.
Stretching, then a 1-mile bike ride to make sure bike tuning was OK. Then a brief jog, and finally a brief swim to get used to the water.
