Pre-race routine:

Had everything ready to go the night before, bike was racked on the van and ready to pull out of the garage.

Event warmup:

Ran for about 12 minutes with a few pickups after setting up transition.
  • 15m 23s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards

I wanted this to be a PR swim but it didn't happen.
It was a rough start, lots of crowding to the first buoy. Started pretty much in the middle of the pack and paid for it. Lots of bodies pummeling each other, I was on the receiving end of a couple good kicks to the head when I swam up on people too quickly. Spent the first few minutes basically stuck behind groups of people and looking for openings.

Once we were out of the first turn a ways and it opened up I was able to focus and settle in. My stroke felt good, effort level was high, I passed a bunch of people. I just wasn't able to catch the speedy guys in my AG.

What would you do differently?:

Start further up front. I could have been more aggressive, and I was tempted to, but this is a local sprint and there are a good number of first timers in races like this. To my mind, experienced racers can choose to either start up front or deal with being held up by the pack. This kind of race isn't the place to get all aggro just because you place yourself poorly at the start.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s

OA: 39
AG: 8

Not bad! My transition mojo might be coming back.

Suit did get stuck on left heel. Derek was there and asked "how'd it go?". I said something like "fine", my suit got stuck on my heel and another guy in transition says "well it was going fine up until now". Pretty funny in context.
What would you do differently?:

The usual: move faster out of the water, not take as long to get to the bike.
  • 43m 16s
  • 13.95 miles
  • 19.34 mile/hr

I used to be good at climbing hills. Now...

Still, I did a 32 mile ride with climbing the day before so it's expected I wouldn't ride great here. I went harder than I had planned to. Got caught up in the fact that it was a race and just decided to push it a bit. Glad I did.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. Ride hills more.

I'm coming to accept the fact that 2 jobs, 2 kids, a house etc will prevent me from riding as much as I'd like. Maybe next year...
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s

OA: 50
AG: 5

Another decent transition. Got out of the shoes well, timed it just right. Dismounted with my leg behind me rather than over the top tube. put the socks on quick enough
What would you do differently?:

run without socks. Gotta work on that.
  • 22m 34s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile

I was really hoping for a pace around 7's here. I WILL do a sprint with sub-7's at some point. I know I have it in me.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder. Get on the pain train and ride it.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with bters, cheered on people coming into the chute.

Got to meet and hang with a lot of BTer's at this race, I love that. boyddr, 1sttimetri, shane, mcole158 and his dad, shanec_75 (who's back from a serious illness) and lots more.

One thing I love is during a race when some people see the tri-suit and yell out "BT!!" particularly when I don't know them. That just makes my race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The usual inconsistent training in the previous couple months. No taper at all. I had hard workouts in all 3 sports in the 3 days before this race.

Event comments:

This is classic Finger Lakes region racing. A nice lake swim, some good climbs on the bike and nice views on the run.

Another great job by Score-This. They put on a great race and I really like the new bike racking method.

One of the great things about this race is the food. Access to the college cafeteria is just awesome.
