Pre-race routine:

Didn't get much sleep. Being on call 24-7-365 really sucks. Got up and got my stuff in the car. Brought a package of poptarts for breakfast. I get on the road and start eating them..they taste really funny. I'm like WTF is wrong with these...NO FROSTING!!! WHO BOUGHT THOSE??? SHAUN? I only managed to eat 1/2 of one. Not enough calories.
Event warmup:

Got there and spotted Betsy right away. We did the packet pickup thing and brought our stuff back to the car. We just hung out waiting for everyone. Team Terri was out in full force:) Me, Betsy, Jeff, Mike, Wendi, Pete, Beka, Ben, and Terris mom. About 5 minutes to the start we all scattered into the start area

Comments:

Moffitt is an emotional place for me. Both my parents are patients there. My friend Jennifer was a patient there. She lost her battle with cancer recently. My aunt and grandfather both died of cancer. Plus everything going on with Terri right now. Moffitt was my target charity for Janus Charity Challenge. I was a bit teary at the start and glad to be on my own.

I started out fine. Just doing my thing and getting passed by tons of people. I decided on a 9:1 run:walk because that is what I did at this race last year. I did the first mile in 10:54. excellent for me. Wendi and I were passing each other back and forth depending on who was walking. I felt decent. My leg was a bit sore but when is my leg not sore? Second mile 11:51????? WTF I felt like I was doing WAY better than that. This was when the blisters started. I got new orthotics. I figured the worst that would happen would be that I would get blisters YEP. By 2.5 miles I didn't give a rats ass about what my time would be. Changed to a 4:1 run:walk

Mile 3 12:58. BLECH. Hot sweaty dizzy blisters leg hurting. Mile 4 12:04 at this point I really just wanted to be done. Sweatier hotter blisters bigger. I was thinking that my marathon during my IM didn't hurt this bad. Considered just stopping at my truck. Thought about all the people in my life affected by cancer. Mile 5 a blistering 15:15. Walked a lot...obviously. I knew what Pete had in store and I was so mad at myself that I was going to miss it because I can't run
What would you do differently?:

Eat, not use new orthotics, eat, not much I can do about the heat
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the line...saw a big ole ring on Terris hand !! WHOOOP WHOOP congrats to Pete and Terri. Took my shoes off. walked around. We did the picture thing. I bought some hats that say Cancer Sucks on them for my mom and dad. Jeff and Betsy both did excellent. I took off to go to Flatwoods to make up my bike ride from yesterday. HUGE mistake. Even tho I felt like crap I was not hungry. I bonked BIG TIME

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I made a lot of tactical errors in this race. Good to know I guess. I have been trying to loose weight and the calories ahve been REALLY low the last few weeks. Not helpful. I was super busy all last week. Not helpful. I have gotten 8 hours of sleep since I woke up thursday morning. Also not helpful. I wore my new orthotics thinking the worst that would happen would be I would get blisters. YEP!!! not helpful. I brought a pack of poptarts for breakfast but I they tasted funny and it was a while before I realized why NO FROSTING!!!! I ended up only eating 1/2 of one (about 100 calories) not so good.

Event comments:

This just wasn't my day to do well in a race. It WAS a day to be thankful that I am healthy enough to race even if I race slowly. To be thankful for Moffitt as it has given my parents the gift of a cancer free life. A day to pray the research done there erradicates Terri's cancer for good. And best of all a day for Pete and Terri to get engaged!!!
