Pre-race routine:

******Overall rankings are out of women********

Got up at 3:50am. Hit snooze button and SERIOUSLY considered not going. After that last 10K disaster I just have not been motivated to race. Got up and got my stuff and my sorry ass in the car. Ate some FROSTED poptarts on the way down. Got my packet and EXCELLENT SWAG. Head sweats hat, techincal shirt and the usual stuff. Got transition set up and just kind of hung out. Saw some people I know and I was bored so I took a little swim.
Event warmup:

Little swim. Had a gel about 30 minutes before the race started.
Swim
  • 07m 40s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water is VERY low this year. The edge of the water is probably 20 feet further away than last year. It was run jump in swim for about 20 yards then stand up again and walk across the sand bar because the water is only about 18-24 inches deep. I think I did welldrafting the first little bit then I was kind of alone in the middle of the pack. Coming back in the sun was in my eyes. You had to walk over the sand bar again then swim again. I swam right into a swim marker because you couldnot see a thing in the sun. It was a good swim for me. This year it was the corrrect distance and everything. Last year the swim was long.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to swim more. This was a goodtime for me
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

5/17 AG and 23/108 women

It was a long way from the swim exit to transition. About 100 yards on soft sand. Once I got there I just thru on my helmet and glasses and off I went. I elastic my shoes on the bike and do not wear socks on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Be a better runner so I can run the whole way to transition
Bike
  • 44m 42s
  • 15.23 miles
  • 20.44 mile/hr
Comments:

I had an awesome bike. I really pushed it HARD. Remembering the course from last year definately helped. I knew where the hills were and I knew I was doing much better than last year. I passed tons of people and I do not think any women passed me. I was a little wheezy but able to reign it in.
What would you do differently?:

I can't complain about 1st in age group and 3rd overall female on the bike. The field was MUCH tougher than last year. I pushed about as hard as I could. I wouldn't do anything different except train harder so I am more accustomed to pushing that hard on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

14/17 AG and 87/108 women

I swear I did not have a tea party in T2!!!! Thing is I bike without socks and I cannot run without them so I had to sit down and put socks and shoes on. I took a puff on my inhaler and got my belt, hat and water bottle. I walked thru T2 because I was out of breath
What would you do differently?:

build more endurance so I can RUN
Run
  • 40m 5s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Well the only thing good I can say is 1-it was better than last year and 2-my left leg issues seem to have resolved. Then again I was dead slow. I know what triggers my EIA this year. 1-heat...it was hot 2-allergens 3-exertion (yep see bike section) I knew I need to get my heart rate down. Fortunately I had my trusty inhaler and used it as I needed it!!! I walked the first 2 minutes to get my HR down and my breathing under control. After that I did my 4:1 run : walk for the most part. It was uber hot. I was glad I had my own water bottle and I refilled it at one of the water stations. My hamstring was killing me. I know it is slow but I did the best I could.
What would you do differently?:

heal hamstring, learn to run
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water at the finish and dumped it all over myself. I packed up my transition area and put my stuff in the car. Grabbed my dry stuff and got changed. I checked the results.......geez o pete talk about a stacked field. 15% of all the women were in my age group. I think people looked at last years results and signed up knowing they could do well. I was 10 minutes SLOWER last year and got 4th. Last years winning time would have been 9th or 10th.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Um lets see..classic Ott performance good swim and bike crappy run. Shocking I know. I can't freaking run and I'm always freaking injured

Event comments:

This race was even better this year. Hell I'd sign up for the swag. Nice bike course, corrected swim and well....the run is hot but I cannot blame my performance on the course. Its flat and fast but I am not....

Overall I was 10 minutes faster than last year so I can't complain. I am pleased with my bike. I just can't compete against runners. Stoopid freaking runners!! I think I have a future as a really good aquabike athlete :)
