Pre-race routine:

Well we got up and I had the requisite 3 diet cokes on the way. We got some yummy corn muffins the day before so that was breakfast. My mom, dad, uncle and I plus bike and gear etc squashed into the Chevy Malibu. HUMPH. I put the bike together and set up my stuff. I was still trying to figure out what to wear. I wanted to wear my tean terri shirt but I can't swim in it. I decided to wear it post race instead :)

I had some fruit bars I ate before the start. Hung out with everyone. I did a little swim because 1-I have not put my wet suit on since April and 2-I had not swum in a week. Luckily the wetsuit still fit and alas I remembered how to swim:)

My uncle had never been to a race before. He asked me if when everyone got out of the water if then you waited for everyone to be done swimming and you go out on the bike together. Um no its a race......I thought it was cute.

My legs were really tired and sore. I had a big run week this week. good but big. Also I walked 36 holes of golf.....18 on friday...Dumb but I wanted to burn some calories. My legs were sore before I did that and worse after. I so needed a massage but as I didn't have a rental car and had family commitments so it didn't work out for me.
Event warmup:

swam a little, talked a little

Comments:

I managed to draft MUCH better this year. I really stayed with the pack. I felt like I swam better this year but I was slower. Actually I didn't expect to be faster as I had a stellar swim last year and I am not doing near the volume I was last season. Began passing people from other waves about the 1/2 way point. Cut the corner on the home stretch.

Ok this water was GROSS. Really weedy on the last leg. At one point I had a weed across my nose ICK. and I swallowed some debris and was like PHOOTTIE BLECK ICK....Ok so I am a surgoen but I'm also a total girlie girl. I had pond scum on me all day. I tried to get most of it off on the bike but ICK.

I felt like I swam really well, although about 2/3rds of the way thru quite frankly I was bored with it and ready to be done. I could have pushed a tiny bit harder but pacing in open water is still a struggle for me.
What would you do differently?:

swim more, push a bit harder.
Transition 1
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

Mostly walked to transition. Wet suit off. Didn't get as hung up as usual. Bike stuff on and off I go. I elastic my shoes on so no worries about running in bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

I usually walk into transition because I don't like to get on the bike winded. I would like to resolve that but not sure how

I did a few minutes better than last year. I was actually doing quite excellent I thought for the first 45 minutes or so. I was handling the hills well (yeah I know they are not big but I live in flatland Florida people and I have to drive an hour to get to hills) At anyrate I felt like I managed them much better than last year. At first I was getting carried away by the scenery again and then I kicked it up a notch. I officially love my race wheels. It is so easy to accelerate on them. I was averaging over 20 which is good for me. The road was quite rough in some places. I guess I am spoiled by good pavement in FL. I had to slow quite often to not get thrown off the bike and I was afraid of damaging my wheels. These guys would come blowing by me and I have NO IDEA how they managed that!!! I would have been SPLAT on the road going that fast over those bumps.

About 45 minutes in I just 1-got really tired and fatigued and 2-my legs started SCREAMING and I mean SCREAMING at me. I kept up a decent pace thru 20 miles hitting that mark in under an hour. I drank all 50 oz I had with me. I picked up a water bottle at the aide station but never used it to re-fill my aerobottle. I did a gel about 30-40 minutes into the bike.

The last 5 miles were a real struggle. I just really hit a wall for some bizzare reason. I was back and forth with a lady who I talked with a bit. She was from CT. We kept passing each other back and forth. It was nice to have someone to ride with. At one point I said "Come on Conneticut you can let my fat flatlander florida ass pass you" She laughed and eventually passed me back thanking me for motivating her to kick it up.
What would you do differently?:

no idea except maybe not walk a round of golf 2 days before a race and get a massage when I know I need one!!
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Not much to it. Racked bike, sat down and put on my socks and shoes. Took a hit on my inhaler, grabbed my race belt, hat and drink bottle. Saw my family outside transition and waved to them.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I need the socks.

Comments:

I was fatigued and sore coming off the bike. I'm really disappointed. I have been running really well but I guess it just wasn't my day. Again. I walked out of transition because I REALLY need to not start my run winded. I had my bottle of NUUN. I had my inhaler THANK GOD. I started run/walking to get my HR down and breathing under control.

I finally settled into a pace and I heard somone sounding like freight train coming up behind me. KathyG. She stopped to walk so I stopped to walk with her. She was cramping bad and had taken all her electrolytes so I gave her mine not knowing I'd need them later. I walked for a bit with her and asked her if she minded if I ran and went on. Unfortunately the rhythm was gone. I tried to do a 4:1 run walk. It was all just poo.

My legs hurt, my foot really hurt and I was having trouble breathing. It would have been even worse if I had not taken my inhaler. I just never got back in my groove. I cramped on the run for the first time ever. The fucking timing chip strap was cutting my leg. After adjusting it a bunch of times I finally took the bloody (and I mean literally bloody) thing off and attached it to my shoe. At least ONE place on my leg was happy then!! I had finished my water bottle by mile 3 and used what was on the course by then.

At one aide station a teenaged volunteer decided that throwing water on me would be a good idea and thew a cup of water in my ear. BLAH. Not so good.

I did a tiny tiny bit better the last 2 miles. At this point I knew PRing was out of the question and decided I never wanted to race again, did not want to do my HIM and the most I would do in vegas would be the Oly. DK passed me inside the last mile and Joe was close behind. I gave him a big ole BT WHOOP WHOOP which I guess he didn't want to hear because he shusshed me. Sorry just trying to be friendly. Guess he was trying to sneak up on DK.

I got to say its demoralizing to be passed by about 200 people on the run.

What would you do differently?:

Become an aquabike athlete? Get my own timing chip so the strap doesn't cut my leg. Get a massage when I know I need one. I actually have my own chip strap but I was afraid they would take it away from me if I used it. No idea on the rest of it. I gotta say my SI joint was jacked up all week from sitting on that damn plane for 4 hours on my 40 minute flight.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and got some water etc. Found the BT crew and my family. Went to the ART tent for someone to do SOMETHING with my hammy/SI joint. Ate something. Drank a lot. (diet coke people...of course) Hung out with the NE BT crew. Packed things up and we went home.

Post race bike box packing UGH!!!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lets see.....um I SUCK AT RUNNING. Just like at every other fucking race I have ever done. Injuries. BLAH. I don't think the heat was a factor at all for me.

Event comments:

This is a good race and it was good to see the NE crew. My mom wasn't feeling well tho. Poor mom. My dad always has a good time at races and I think my uncle had a good time too. Poor guy doesn't get out much. I'm really disappointed I didn't run better. I'm sure it was multifactorial but I wish I could pin it down.
