Pre-race routine:

Drove from TN to MI (10 hrs), arriving at 5pm the night before the race. Slept at my Mom's house which is right along the bike & run routes. Woke up at 4:30am, showered, ate my usual museli with protein powder and drank some HEED. Left the kids in bed at Mom's house and my husband and I headed down to the race site, arriving around 6:15am. Set up my transition area and wandered around, as usual.
Event warmup:

WELL...warmup just didn't happend, unfortunately. There was supposed to be a 10 min pre-race meeting at 7:30, and I had planned to swim a bit after that to warm up. However, the meeting was delayed to the point where there was no time left to warm up. Also, it was FREEZING cold and I certainly didn't want to get wet! Although I grew up in Muskegon, I have certainly "softened" up during the last 12 years I've been in TN! I'm such a temperature wimp these days! : )

Comments:

Never, EVER, test out new equipment at a race. We all know that, however when you lose your goggles right before a race what do you do?? You hope for the best. My new goggles started leaking right off the bat, but after I stopped two times and adjusted them, they were fine. Live and learn! The goggle-issue messed up my head a bit, and and combined with my lack of warmup, I couldn't get my breating under control until almost the first buoy (500m). That missed warmup would have fixed my goggle isssue too...doh! After I settled in, I felt like I was swimming well. I could tell as I neared shore because suddenly there was a forest of seaweed underneath me, like inches from my face. My arms were stroking through it, but it didn't tangle me up. It was really very cool!
What would you do differently?:

WARM UP! Good grief, when will I EVER learn this lesson!! On a positive note, my recent practice siting seemed to have paid off because my navigation went pretty well.
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

The distance from swim to transition was approximately 150 yards, so I elected to strip my wetsuit immediately after exiting the water. That worked well as far as ease in removing the wetsuit. However, due to the location of the timing pads, that time was included in my swim split instead of my T1 split. No big deal, really.
What would you do differently?:

T1 went well, I was in and out of there quickly and no issues with stumbling around or losing my balance while getting my bike stuff on.

Comments:

This was one lonely bike ride! With only 34 people in the race, we were quite spread out along the bike course. I think I only saw 3 other racers the entire 2 hours I was out there. Thankfully my family was driving around and parking at strategic locations to cheer me on as I rode by.
What would you do differently?:

I feel like my biking has been declining since I've been riding more outdoors this Summer. I think I'm going to try to include 1 spin class per week back into my training schedule, I need someone pushing me harder.

Quick and easy!
Run
  • 1h 08m 55s
  • 7.1 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I was losing steam by this time. Every time I tried to pick up my pace, a few minutes later I would feel myself slowing down. I think I was passed by 1 guy during the run, and other than that really didn't see anyone else except for another guy way ahead of me. I was feeling really lousey, but just kept pushing through to the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Drink Gatorade, walk around, etc.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't think I spent enough time training with brick work to prepare me for a race of almost 4 hours in duration. The longest training session I did leading into this was 3 hours.

Event comments:

The course and length of this race were great, and the views of Lake Michigan were beautiful! This was only the 2nd year for this race, and the organizer certainly had his hands full. This race shows alot of potential to grow into a significant event, I would recommend it. The more people we get out supporting this event, the better it well get!

Performance: Average
Suit: Full Wetsuit
Course: Counter-clockwise triangle. There is a West bound current in Muskegon Lake, moving out towards Lake Michigan. During the second leg of the swim, we were swimming against this current, but it wasn't too bad. The first and third legs of the swim were more-or-less with the current, on an angle. Muskegon Lake is a large lake, and there was a bit of a chop on it which added to the challenge of this swim. The hardest part of the swim was the fact that the buoys were very small and difficult to sight. Also, after rounding the last buoy, it wasn't clear where on the shore the exit point was. My husband told me that a few swimmers got quite a bit off course to the point where a kyack had to chase them down and turn them back in the right direction.

Course: A big figure-8. Predominately FLAT as a pancake, with one moderate hill around mile 30. Road surface was average, mostly smooth with some potholes here and there. Except for a stretch of about 1.5 miles near mile 30 that was extremely rough. This was manageable however and major holes were marked with paint. I didn't mind the rough surface because that was the only way to include the only hill in the area in the bike course. You either get rough road with a hill, or smooth road and no hill. I like hills, so I can live with the bumps! Lots of volunteers and Police support at intersections, that was much appreciated. The views of Lake Michigan were spectacular!
