Event comments:

We made a good natured bet. This was a race against my 2 sons, aged 14 and 11. Thomas, 14 was doing the run portion - I knew he would have faster times than me (he's on the HS track team). Patrick, 11 was doing the bike. If I had any chance of winning, I would have to beat Patrick on the bike, passing him, I figured, by the end of the 2nd lap. Well, he rode so strong, I didn't get to him until nearly the end of the 3rd lap. I thought for sure the boys had the race won. On the final run leg, I knew I would have a few minute lead, but Thomas would be barreling down on me. "OK, if I can hold the lead until the 1st mile marker, that wouldn't be too bad" I said to myself. First mile marker came, and no Thomas. "OK, if I can hold the lead until the 2nd mile marker, that would be great"... still, no Thomas. I kept looking back in disbelief. Finally, on the home stretch, I looked back, and I saw Thomas, sprinting. He was still a good distance back, but I didn't leave anything to chance. Unbelievably, I finished the race 30 seconds ahead of the boys.
They want to do this again next year, but this time, I don't think I am going to bet them. They will be 1 year older and stronger, and I will be, well, 1 year older!
