Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30. Had a peanut butter and honey bagel at 5:45. Packed up the car and headed to the race at 5:40. Got there before the gates opened up. Had a brief wait on the long line of cars, but not too bad.

My wave wasn't going off until 8:40. Tried to eat a clif bar at 8 but transition was closed and it was left in my bag. Prior to the swim I was really hungry. I sipped water and had a gel prior while waiting.
Event warmup:

Ran for 5 minutes and swam for about 200 meters prior to 8am. Not sure how beneficial this was considering I had such a long wait for my wave to start.

While waiting for my wave I caught my wife oogling the 20-24 y/o men coming out of the water. If that is what it takes to get her to the races with me... so be it. I'm still the guy she came home with. She was a trooper for me this weekend and that is just one of the reasons I love her with all my heart.

Comments:

Wow! I really thought I had done enough swimming to perform much better than I did. I positioned myself toward the front of the pack. Didn't get swam over that much, but should I think I went out too fast in the dirty bath water we swam in.

There was a little bit of contact, but nothing horrible. One woman from the previous wave did get a full contact grope of my package during her follow through. I hope it was good for her... did nothing for me.

This was my worst OWS to date. I'm blaming the hot temp of the water. My form broke down and I really struggled at times. My body didn't feel fatigued, but I couldn't perform. After I would site I would try to swim for 10 strokes. This didn't work and I would have to dog paddle or back stroke to catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

I have given up my long continuous swim training for longer (50+ mile rides) on Saturdays. If nothing else these are confidence builders and I need to reincorporate them into my training.

I will also start near the back of the pack and ease into my swim. Hopefully this will help with form, fatigue and siting.

Not sure what to do about the bath water temps except swim in the indoor pool at my Y leading up to the race as well as incorporate some OWS practice.

Comments:

I was disappointed in my swim. I wanted to come out of the water in 16-18 minutes. This lead to me going through the motions in T1. There was no urgency. When I got to the mount line I had a hard time getting in the saddle and getting clipped in. Once again no focus and no urgency.
What would you do differently?:

Shake off the bad swim. Just move faster.

Comments:

Leading up to the race I was told to save it for the run. I wanted to avg 20+mph on the bike and came pretty close. I took it easy. The added bike training has definitely helped. I felt good for the entire bike.

I passed a number of Clydes and more women than I can count. Had a good back and forth on the bike with a guy on a Bianchi. Passed him early. He passed me in the middle. I passed him again later. He passed me before we turned back into the park. That was all I needed to mark him as my rabbit for the run.

I had some gas left in the tank for the run. I could have pushed harder on the bike, but playing conservatively helped with my run.
What would you do differently?:

Not waste time putzing around getting clipped in.

Other than that not sure... there is a fine line when you are racing in such hot and humid conditions. I'm satisfied.

Continue increasing bike volume and bike fitness. The secret is easy... more TITS
Transition 2

Comments:

First flying dismount of my tri career in a race. Very happy with it. Probably could have run faster to my rack, but other than that I was happy.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster with bike.
Run

Comments:

My fastest tri 5K yet. I felt pretty good throughout the entire run. Would have like to get the icy towels twice instead of just once (first aid station was out when I got there).

Passed my rabbit in transition and never saw him again. Didn't get passed by any clydes on the run.

The added bike fitness has definitely helped my run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Keep training hard and smart. Possibly more transition runs and bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank water and my accelerade. Watched one of my friends come in to finish his first tri. He did pretty well considering this was his first tri ever and had to deal with the hot conditions and pre race nerves.

Didn't hang out too long. Really wanted a post race beer, but the line was too long. Had to get back to Dallas.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming in a hot tub full of coffee grounds.

Event comments:

The goody bag is awesome. This is a great race that is put on very well. Plenty of aid stations etc. on the run. Will definitely be back. I have a score to settle with that swim course.
