Swim
Comments: I was really worried about the swim. This was my longest OWS to date and after my swim at RiverCities I was nervous. I tried to stay calm and keep my heart rate low. I positioned my self to the back of pack on the inside. There was plenty of room at the start so I started slowly and kept a good line to the buoys. Going out you passed the turn buoys for the sprint after about 150 yards. This is where I ran into two guys breast stroking 150 yards into the swim side by side. It was like they were blocking on the bike. I had to slow down and swim past them to the inside to avoid getting kicked. Got out to the OLY turn buoy and it was a straight shot across the lake to the second orange OLY buoy for the turn back to the beach. I don't remember passing the middle buoy at all. When I got to the turn buoy I kept going straight for about 10 yards before I realized I was going the wrong way. Made the turn and headed for dry land. The entire time I felt as if the chop was pounding one side of my head or the other. Never felt like the current came from behind to help carry me towards shore. Came out of the water in 28:30. Best case scenario was 30 minutes so I was very happy. This was the most comfortable OWS I have had yet. What would you do differently?: Keep swimming. I think I can go faster/be more efficient. I have the fitness I'm just not a fast swimmer. More OWS practice will help with navigational issues. I sighted pretty well here, but there is always room for improvement. Transition 1
Comments: There was a pretty long run from the water to the transition area. Considering I put on socks and my tri top here I'm not unsatisfied with this time. What would you do differently?: I could have raced without a shirt I guess... Socks are a must though! Bike
Comments: I had a score to settle with this course. I flatted twice out here at the Disco duathlon. I've been riding quite a bit since then and I could tell it helped. Other than some chip seal and the one crappy section of the road I think I like this course. You really need to pay attention. I spun up most of the hills in the aero position only getting out of the saddle a couple times to stretch the legs. I lost focus towards the end of the bike. I started daydreaming or something. I looked down and was cruising at a leisurely 16mph like I was just out for a stroll. What would you do differently?: Not lose focus. I waited until I was into the bike to pop some endurolytes. I should have taken some in T1 and again at the end of the bike to prep for the run. Overall things went well. My goal was a 20mph avg and I nailed that. I had some water left in my bottle. I need to be more regimented in consuming it. Transition 2
Comments: Perfectly executed flying dismount! The guys at the dismount line were screaming at me regarding the line. I rode right to the line, popped off and was running without breaking stride. I took a gel and had some water after getting my shoes on. I could have taken the gel on the run and shaved a couple seconds off here. What would you do differently?: Get a gel flask. Run
Comments: I went out conservatively on the run. This was my first olympic distance event. I walked three seperate aid stations to make sure I got enough water. The lungs felt great and the legs were OK. I started cramping a little towards the end. I should have hit the e-caps twice as I mentioned above. Nobody from my AG passed me and I passed a few people. I don't think I left anything on the course, but I can do better. What would you do differently?: More e-caps and water on the bike. The legs felt good coming off the bike, but more bricks in training will have them feeling even better. I also ate pretty crappily (grammar!) all week due to work commitments and over endulging my lazy side during my taper. Post race
Warm down: Had some pizza and fluids. Jumped into the lake with Moe (my dog)and played fetch. Packed up and headed back to Dallas. What limited your ability to perform faster: I went into this race conservatively. First Oly distance so there was a little fear of the unknown. I'm very happy with my overall performance. With a couple tweaks I could have jumped 4-5 spots in my AG. Had I raced as a Clyde I would have been 1st Clyde overall. Damned weightloss and my own integrity. Event comments: Much better performance for Dallas Athletes than Disco. Still a little disorganized for my tastes. I'll take Iron Jack and his "grumpy attitude" any day. Woke up at 3:30. Had a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter, a gatorade and coffee. I packed the night before so I loaded up the car with the wife and dog and hit the streets for Valley View at 4:45.
Got a nice spot in transition on the end of a rack. Set up my gear and walked around visiting with friends.
There was some confusion about the start time and when transition closed so I didn't get to warm up on the bike or the run. Swam about 200 meters before my wave went off.
