Swim
Comments: Much better than last week. Water was warm, bike had 2 tires filled with air, time to warm up.. I felt like I was swimming great.. my first run start was fun.. I stayed off to the left most of the swim.. but was able to sight pretty well I though. Not sure if that hurt my time significantly. I rounded the second bouy at 17 minutes.. I thought for sure I would be able to beat my 30 min time from last week.. after all, I was actually swimming from the start! But for some reason, it just kept going on and on.. it felt like much futher than a mile.. especially compared to last week in Montauk. I'm not sure if Montauk was short, and this was long or both. Over all a nice improvment as far as technique goes. What would you do differently?: Swim faster! I was holding back and conservative the entire race b/c I wanted my first oly finish so badly. Stay in the pack and not go to far left or right to avoid traffic. I was actually out of the water at 35:50 min - the extra min was the run up to transition. Transition 1
Comments: Keeping with conservative theme.. did jog to the rack, but took my time a little bit. Had to put on a shirt b/c I still need a race belt and tri shirt. Had a swig of gatorade and a gu. Smilied for a picture and jogged out to the bike mount What would you do differently?: Tri shirt/race belt, and pick up the pace. It is a race afterall. Bike
Comments: There were several REALLY fast downhills that the race director made a point to mentioned before the race - he said to use the breaks and watch the sharp left turn. There was one stretch of rough road that the they marked with spray paint. I hit 40.6 MPH on one down hill - which for me is insane. All I was thinking was "hold on - if you fall it won't be pretty." Then there were those hills.. I was able to stay in the saddle for the entire bike, but I was really feeling it. Got passed by a good chunk of riders, but I didn't care.. My tires had air in them. The smily face sign that marked the end of the biggest hills was a nice touch - but don't be fooled, the hills never really stopped. Had about 20oz of gatorade throughout the ride which seemed about right. Stared to get a little hungry but better then too full. What would you do differently?: Uh, maybe find a course that didn't go straight up! Push a little harder. Transition 2
Comments: Was glad to have made it though that bike course alive and still able to stand. Racked the bike and realized my hammys were tight. Took a swig of gatorade and popped a gu. Smiled for a picture - My wife yelled from a distance to get moving.. I guess I was just taking my time. Threw on the shoes and was off. Watched one guy go in the wrong direction to the bike entrace.. What would you do differently?: Pick up the pace. Run
Comments: Most of the run was shaded which was really nice.. however, here come the hills again. Early into the 1.5 mile leg was a long down hill.. seeing the pack ahead of me on that hill was not encouraging. Add to that knowing I would have to hit the hill twice was daunting! In the end, it wasn't too bad. Started out too fast, but got into the 9min mile pace I was shooting for. Felt pretty good, but I could feel the legs starting to run out of gas. They had gatorade and water on the run course which I hit each time I passed it. What would you do differently?: More time on bike should help with the legs on the run. A few more bricks would be good too. Post race
Warm down: Lots of good stuff after the finish... big bbq with beer and soda. All I wanted was some water which was a little hard to find! Plenty of beer though so I guess I shouldn't complain. :) Walked around a bit and had a burger and soda with the fam. What limited your ability to perform faster: Approached the entire race conservativly to really make sure I finished.. I wanted the finish more than anything after the DNF the week before with the flat. Event comments: Great race - I was pumped to have finished my first Oly. Was never on my schedule. Only found it after the DNF the week before. I overheard someone say "the only flat part of the course was the swim." So although I woudl have liked have had better times, I'm still happy I did okay given the course, and my conservative approach. I would definitly do this race again to see how much better I could do. Plus, it will make me train on hills to be ready. :) Whoo-hoo! Last updated: 2007-06-11 12:00 AM

Got the hotel Friday night with the fam after quick packet pickup.. Settled in - and topped off pressure in the new tires at 145psi. Yes, the NIGHT BEFORE - no way I would touch the tires race morning after last weeks debacle. Got about 6 hrs of restless sleep with a 2 yr old kicking us the entire night. Up at 5:30, had a 100 cal clif bar and dragged ourselves to the race start. Plenty of room in transition, got marked and took my time setting up. Tires still looking good. :)
Got suited up, took a few pictures and jumped in the water to check out the temp and warmup. Swam for a bit and felt really good. Fresh water and 70 degrees was a nice change from last week. This time I would be able to get my face in the water a the start. Have to tell you, the bouys look like they were a hundred miles away..
