Age Group Rank = 15/54
Pre-race routine:

4:45am wake up call - Drove in from Atlanta
Event warmup:

Swam 50 yards to make sure goggles weren't leaking
Swim
  • 13m 39s
  • 656 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Race for all intents was over in the first 100 meters of the swam. I blew myself up in the washing machine before the first buoy - Goggles knocked askew and leaking, heartrate through the roof, swallowing water, etc.
Just plain tried to go out too fast for my swim fitness level. Now I know better. .

Found a little bit of my stroke towards the end, but the damage was done. .
What would you do differently?:

Quite simple, really. I do not train to sprint when I am working out at the pool - Long steady effort is not how you get ready for a short race like this. Need to incorporate some more intensity to the mix.
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

I was in the very last rack before T1 exit. Don't know if this was good or bad. Jersey wouldn't go over my head!
What would you do differently?:

Not run the same pace as the guy in front of me. I think I forgot it was a race.
Bike
  • 35m 58s
  • 12.8 miles
  • 21.35 mile/hr
Comments:

My strong suit was undone by heartrate that was way too high after the swim. I passed enough people to feel ok about the effort but not satisfied.
What would you do differently?:

Segment was at the mercy of my swim hangover. .
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Couldn't get my left shoe unclipped before the dismount line! Ran into T2 with one cycling shoe on, the other off. Thank you. Thank you. I'll be here all week.
Run
  • 23m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, some of the hills were tough. I wasn't passed too much but don't recall if reeled in anyone in my AG either, so just kind of held my ground.

I have a number of running races coming up - That's gonna help me get a little faster, I think.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of preparation in the swim. I would have done better overall if my effort in the beginning had been a little bit more controlled.

Event comments:

As mediocre as my day was, I must say I thought the race was extremely well run. The organizers did an excellent job of making the event smooth.

I've changed my race plans and now plan to show up at the series race in August for a little revenge.
