Pre-race routine:

We had a hotel reservation at the race hotel - the sheraton sand key which was perfect - a really nice hotel and right next to the transition. We could see transition out of our window. Nice hotel as well. WE ate sushi night before and were asleep by 10pm. Woke up at 5:15 and walked our gear over to the race and set up transition. There was a small table to vcollect chips and people were lining up with their bikes at this little table. We racked our gear and walked back to get our chips and they would not give us our chip based on our marked body- so we had to go back and get our race number - bring it to the table, then get our chip walk back to put the number away for the run and woalk again out of transition. PITA. We went to the potty then to the swim.
Swim
  • 14m 32s
  • 483 meters
  • 03m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

It was a nice chop and i still have problems with my lenses and getting water into them. I need to train a lot more than i do for the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Train more
Transition 1
  • 08m 14s
Comments:

Long transition running on sand then into the corral. It takes me forever and a day to get the gear on - i skipped the gloves this time as for 13 miles they are unneccesary.
Bike
  • 40m 26s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.29 mile/hr
Comments:

This bummed me out. I came into this race without swimming or running much in the past several weeks and expected to do poorly, but i was geared up for a big bike. I held a goo cadence and spun up the first bridge, then the second bridge i held about halway then puttered out. I made it up, but mashing and dying all at once. After that it was off to the races, except at a small bridge where they would let some bikes through , then some cars and the trafic was going 12 mph, and there was nowhere to pass a car or bike. I was steamed, but the woman who was behind the same car i was laughed and it made me loosen up a little. Once the cars turned, it was back on.
Transition 2
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

I am a turtle in transition. I need to consider not wearing socks, because they are time eaters.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions
Run
  • 43m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

O My God!!!! My BMI indicates that I am difficult to insure and that I should not run in sand. I sink into sand like it is 1 foot deep snow. It KILLS me!!! I walked a good portion of the sandy portion of the run although by the last .25 mile of snad i realized it is easier to run through sand than walk. I live in Florida an dhave no excuse to not train in the sand at least every other week just to get the feel for it. I got my ass kicked here. It was pretty hot as well - my hydration was good, but the heat was real bad. Fortunately there was a lot of shade on the course, but where there was no shade it was HOT! I did a lot of walking and turned in a personal worst for a 5k since i have started.
What would you do differently?:

Run through the sand. Train in sand.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a cold towel on the head and a medal around my neck. Claudie missed a turn and therefore about .5miles on the run - shae had to go DQ herself and she felt really bad, so we drank gatorades had some water and went to the beautiful breakfast buffet at the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, training, training.

Event comments:

The chip table needed improvement, and the traffic issue at the bridge can be addressed, but for a second year event this is a well-run event. PErsonally I could do without the sand, but that is my own problem. There were a lot of officials on the course - and thankfully because there were a lot of people blocking - i didn't see any drafting issues. I would do it again at a lower weight.
