Pre-race routine:

My wife was working the night before, again, so me and the kids stayed at my parents. Got a decent nights sleep on the couch watching the lightning. Got up early to eat, the race was only a couple of miles from the house and was a later start at 0830. Ate the "traditional" blueberry pancake, banana bread, and an apple. Ate a Clif Bar about 1 hr prior to race. Got to site early and got set up.
Event warmup:

Nothing really. Looking at a 1.5 mile swim, should be all the warmup I need. Heard the water temp was measured at 80 degrees, so I decided to wear a wetsuit even though I would not be eligable for awards. Overheard, well anyone in transition could hear, a guy saying he thinks when the water is not cold that wearing a wetsuit is like wearing roller skates for the run, "it's cheating." Wow this statement would continue to bother me all day. I informed him that it was not cheating that if someone chose to wear a wetsuit then they would not get awards.

Comments:

My parents came and brought my kids. This is the first tri that I've had family there and it was nice. Wow, it looked like a long way to the last bouy that you could almost see in the distance. Tried to get into a nice easy pace/stroke. Just kept plugging away. I probably owe a lot of people an apology for swimming into, onto, in front of them. I still have trouble swimming straight. Got to the far bouy, 1/2 way, 3/4 mile, seemed pretty quickly. Sighted much better on the way back. No rest stops. With the wetsuit, I feel like I can swim all day.
What would you do differently?:

Practice sighting, practice sighting, learn to swim straight, and practice sighting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Wading out of the water, I tried to get top half of wetsuit down. Got it unzipped but it didn't want to come off my shoulders. On the way to transition I figured out it would be easier if I undid the velcro from around the neck. A little run to transition. Got the wetsuit off no problem. Took a shot of gel, grabbed bike, and took off.
What would you do differently?:

This was pretty good trans for me.

Comments:

First off my speed computer didn't work. It doesn't like wetness and it had rained while we were swimming, but still had my cadence computer. Biking is my favorite. Got out good, passed some people and did not get passed. Drank 1 serving of Infinit while on bike course. My family surprised me on the bike course and this was a very nice pick me up.
What would you do differently?:

More hill work, and maybe some different gears. I need to learn about gears and probably need to get a different cassette especially if we get into IMLP next year. Oh, yeah, let's not forget, get a tri bike!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Another "good" transition for me. I do take the time to put socks on after biking. Really no issues here, or so I thought. I left transition and started the run only to realize, I forgot my race number. Had to turn around and go back, taking my chip off before going back into transition, and get the race belt. I figure this cost me about 1 1/2 minutes on my run time. But lesson learned. Also, I took another shot of gel and a drink from my water bottle.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget race number.
Run
  • 38m 3s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt slow at first and wondered if maybe I had not taken in enough calories. Managed to "run/jog/not walk" up the big hill. A little time to recover and I tried to pick it up a little. Passed the "cheater" guy, which felt good. Got passed by a tall guy who was flying. Passed a couple of people and then got passed by a younger, high school kid. I stayed with him until the final downhill, where he left me behind. I saw the family again at the beginning and at the end of the run, it sure makes a difference.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure, I ran decent, but maybe push a little harder sooner. Go ahead and use the bushes to relieve myself.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran straight to the porta potty. I just can't pee on my bike or during the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience, but that is coming. I seem to keep doing better.

Event comments:

Good, unique distant race. Great race directors and people. Good venue. Some of the roads pretty rough.
