Swim
Comments: Best swim of my life. Encouraged with the improvement since June; race strategy paid off for me; easy at first get into rhythm. Debated use of wet suit, but glad I used it. Felt very comfortable in water. Good performance off of which to build. What would you do differently?: Not much to do to improve this swim; found myself a little mentally distracted with the enormous weeds tugging at my feet and entangling my arms; rounded bouys a little wide; need to make my form more muscle-memory dependent. Develop swim mantra focused on keeping everything in alignment, head down, hips up. Transition 1
Comments: continue to struggle with T1. 02:12 is terrible and again the main reason for not finishing higher in standings. What would you do differently?: Need to get some guidance on how to improve this; options: practice getting into shoes with them already on bike (tough due to the fact that my bike shoes are the "ratchet" kind in addition to two velcro straps); forget the bike shoes altogether (use rat-cage pedals, with running shoes); lose the socks for biking/running. Bike
Comments: Good bike, but needed to go harder and really needed to drink more so that my calves didn't cramp on the run.Didn't get passed once on the bike. Corners really slowed me down; was too tentative going into them and lost time getting back up to race.cadence. There were a lot of sharp turns on this course. Wauconda police did a great job keeping traffic at bay at busy intersections. What would you do differently?: learn to corner/turn around better. Work harder on bike; need to get pace into 24mph range. Have to work really hard on the bike for next race. This is really my favorite part of the race and my strength. Transition 2
Comments: Lock laces are a big help in getting running shoes on and getting going. Not a bad transition for T2. What would you do differently?: not much; would help if I chose to ride bike with running shoes instead of bike shoes. Run
Comments: the run hurt a whole lot. Got passed once with about .25mi to go to finish. Kept to plan for most part, but legs started to cramp at mile marker 2 so had to pull up for a short time; was able to push through it and sprinted to finish. Family was there to cheer; felt great to see them at the finish with their signs and encouragement. I have a great family. What would you do differently?: train harder in the brick workouts; hydrate better on bike. Post race
Warm down: bananas, gatorade, water, stretching, basking in the warmth of my wife and 3 children. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lost mental focus couple of times during swim and bike, T1 continues to be abysmal. Event comments: Of the two races I've been in, this one ranks #1. Very well organized, decent goody bag; race volunteers really helpful and encouraging. Very well run race. Will make this one an annual event. Last updated: 2007-06-13 12:00 AM

up at 3:30am, banana/powerbar/water breakfast; arrived at transition area at 4:30am, they were a little late in opening up but once in, found good spot at the end of wave 5 rack. Mentally practiced the exit from water to transition, to bike-out, walked bike-in back to transition and then to run-out.
.25mi jog along the running course, walked around the beach at beginning of swim course, did not do a warm up swim (good choice - those that did were shivering in the cold air during the national anthem)
