Total Time = 1h 14m 48s
Overall Rank = 16/242
Age Group = 30-35
Age Group Rank = 3/17
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4:15, drove 2 1/2 hours to race site. Ate a bagel, banana, and had coffee.
Event warmup:

Got a decent transition spot. Only a couple of bikes in from the end of the rack, and close to the bike-out portion of the T area.

Went for a 4 mile bike to check out "The Hill" prior to the race, and got in a 200-300yd swim. Had a Gel about 1/2 hour prior to start.
Swim
  • 09m 6s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

I decided to start on the far right, but in the front of the wave. It was a relatively large wave of people, and I didn't want to get into a panic attack at the start. I got off to a good start and slowly angled back towards the first buoy. Got bumped around a little bit by some other swimmers zagging out off course, and had someone doing the breaststroke kick my left hand. Jambed my fingers a little bit. After the first buoy, I was swimming the exact same pace as about 3 other swimmers, and I used them for navigation. They hugged the buoy lines well, and I just went along. I probably should have dropped in behind to draft... I like the 1/4 mile swim, as it was over quickly, and I couldn't lose too much time.
What would you do differently?:

Draft.

Overall this was a much better swim than my last Tri.
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Seems like a good transition time, but where the timing pads were, most of the "running" part of transition was tacked on to the swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Might take a little more off of my wetsuit legs
Bike
  • 38m 8s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 21.56 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my best Tri bike leg to date! Since it was, I'm going to adjust the distance in my race report to match the actual distance covered! There, that feels good. I've never averaged over 21mph before, so I was very happy with this. I felt good up the big hill, and only 1 person passed me there. On the rest of the bike, I was holding my own, and even passing some other riders. Looking back on it now, it doesn't seem like it felt real hard, but I think that is just revisionist history! We'll see if I can do this over a longer distance...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, maybe even push harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

Pretty speedy, but had a good rack position
Run
  • 26m 11s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough run. It really was just a gutting it out type of run. I was able to catch a few runners, but then just ended up in "no mans land". I need to really work on some speed here, as this is my discipline to compensate for my swim.
What would you do differently?:

I'll be trying to get some more run mileage in, and some intervals
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, jump in the water to cool off. Grabbed some of the post-race food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, really.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed the race. I liked the entry fee, especially! A great value compared to some of the other Tris I do. I will say the events were on time, just because they notified us as soon as they knew it would be delayed due to same day registration.

Performance: Good

Course: Counter-clockwise in Hiniker Pond. When I heard pond, I was thinking muddy, weedy, dark water. I was surprised. It was a really nice swimming hole. I think the distance was slightly longer than advertised, but nothing too bad.
