Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30 grabbed my gatorade bottles and some cracklin Oat bran for the ride. Gassed up and went. Got to Marlton about 6:50, parked and unloaded my stuff. Checked in and got body marker, visited the porta potties, set up my transition area, then sunscreened up and headed to the pre race meeting
Event warmup:

After the pre race the long walk to the other side of the lake then wading into the water. Got all the way in after the elete wave went off.
Swim
  • 08m 25s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Point to point swim. Started on the right side near the front. Good start, broke clean and got into a nice rhythm right away. Nice relaxed swim, no oontact, only ran one person over and got off him fast, I even caught someone from the elete wave in the water.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up and I probably need new goggles as mine are leaking more often.
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Not a bad transition. Long run on gravelly asphalt to my bike. Put on my ring and glasses, put on my socks, bike shoes, race belt. Had a slight issue wih my helmet, and I was off
What would you do differently?:

Still a bit slow but was smooth. Rank 122/385

Comments:

For the most part it was a good ride. Got clipped in and someone next to me fell but was ok. Got going and had to negotiate two tight turns before getting to Kettle Run Rd. Got into a rhythm and did a good job shifting to keep the effort constant. Did a short back and forth with someone in my age group and we passed a few more from the elete wave(that was a little ego boost). Rode pretty wellspeed up to 24 but mostely around 21. The uphills were ok but did lose a ton on momentum on the short hill going thru the turn and got passed by 3 people, got some of that back but was down to 14 mph. Also was very consevative on the turns due to the loose gravel and potholes and lost a bit each one. Had a couple sections where my focus lapsed and I wasn't working as hard as I should have. But ended up over 20 MPH ave and legs felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Maintain focus and attack those hills. Still need to work on my bikehandling skills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Pretty uneventful. 2nd back to the rack, so easy rack. Sat down pulled off the shoe, kept my running shoes tied and slipped on the shoes and that worked well. Almost forgot my hat and had to backtrack a couple step to get it. Pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Rank 208/385
Run
  • 21m 52s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt good right away and I started a bit quicker than normal. Had two people pass my right out of transition including a woman from the elete wave who I caught on the bike. I tried to keep her in range until my leg really came in. Had 1 other guy who was flying pass my before I started to crank it up. Passed a couple including the elete wave woman and had 2 more easy past including a 15 year old kid (He also started in the elete wave) He became my new target with the goal to keep him within a minute (SInce he had a head start). Started to work but floated a bit till half way. Just after half someone in my age group passed me and I told myself to hang with him and my legs responded. We went at it the rest of the way passing each other a couple times and both really pushed it. We passed an few more folks and finshed strong and even reeled in the 15 year old kid. He held me off at the end but he earned it. Good run 11:10 out and a negative split of 10:42 back. Must be getting better since ran sub 22 and only passed 4 people. Strong run and good effort in the second half.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe next year I'll do some speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Congratulated my racing buddy, grabbed some watermellon and carrot cake and walked back to transition and got changed, loaded up and pushed my bike to the car. Loaded up and drove home. I imagine getting out of that neighborhood post race could be tough.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No warm up, and lack of focus in spots. Don't quite understand how you can go 128th(s) ,122nd (T1), 105th(B), 208th(T2), and 74th(R) and finish 75th overall but I won't complain.

Event comments:

Fun little race. 4th year doing it. Great course for beginners and a good opportunity to go hard for the more experienced folks. Great feel to this race.
