Super Sprint

Overcast
Total Time = 46m 32s
Overall Rank = 299/652
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 13/40
Pre-race routine:

Bit late eating b'fast (poached eggs on toast). Got a good park.
Event warmup:

Swam 50 m in the rough surf.
Swim
  • 09m 12s
  • 250 meters
  • 03m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Fished out after 1st turn buoy. Large waves, but mentally felt I couldn't do it, despite physically being ok. Swallowed some water early on, but it didn't worry me which was a positive. Had a warm up swim first in the waves and felt comfortable and not anxious about the swim. HR on start line was 80 which is excellent and shows that I wasn't anxious. Which makes the fish out even more galling!
What would you do differently?:

Not make the snap decision to DNF. Actually was on the verge of carrying on. Perhaps if help wasn't so close on hand I would have?
Transition 1
  • 05m 28s
Comments:

6th fastest time in age grp. Long run up from beach.
What would you do differently?:

Practice!! Was a bit disorganised, ie putting shoes on with wetsuit still on. DUH!!
Bike
  • 19m 41s
  • 10 kms
  • 30.48 km/hr
Comments:

Pushed hard on bike with little regard for run leg given it was so short. Felt good on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Work even harder on bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Run
  • 09m 2s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 03m 37s  min/km
Comments:

Pushed well, and felt great despite pushing hard on bike. High HR which was intended. (ie 170 plus)
Post race
Warm down:

Eating!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim training! Need to build confidence. If I swam the avg time then I would have had a top 10 finish in the age grp.

Event comments:

Good race. Well organised.

Large pack in large (1-1.5m) swells. FO. Swim leg was shortened by the organisers because of rough conditions. Swim was made optional becuase it was so rough. About 25% of people elected to wait at swim exit and not do the leg.
