Swim
Comments: Started towards the front and to the right. The lake was pretty low so guys were walking pretty far out into the water. Some of them were keeping pace me swimming, but that takes so much energy out of you. Stroke felt ok, navigation seemed pretty good. Sighted every 10 strokes. I wasn't feeling particularly race ready so I didn't push the effort on this swim. Had a few periods where the stroke clicked, then lost it when sighting. Overall it felt ok. Don't know why my performance was so poor. Very disappointing and frustrating. What would you do differently?: I have no idea. Transition 1
Comments: Went well, no issues. OA: 73 AG: 12 Bike
Comments: My performance, both in terms of overall speed and relative to my age group was not what I had hoped for here. Maybe I'm still recovering from last weekend, but I really expected to do better. Saw 2 boneheaded drivers: one in a pickup with the American flag filling his rear window who was buzzing cyclists. I watched him actually drift right towards cyclists who weren't to the right of the white line. Blatantly aggressive. And the other: A full sized dump truck who was pulling up next to and behind cyclists, literally a couple feet away, and blasting his air horn. He did it to me while I was as far right as I could be and I nearly went off the road. He did this to 5 people that I saw and then blocked the road to turn into a yard. He was honking at people to "get out of his way" so he could get to a house 1/4 mile up the street 10 mph faster. What would you do differently?: Go faster. Transition 2
Comments: Stopped to have a gel. Probably a good decision. OA: 107 AG: 19 Run
Comments: This run felt really bad. When I started my lower back was incredibly tight. I couldn't bend it at all had to run upright. Frustrating and unusual, this hadn't happened before. Then I got a side stitch and my right foot started hurting as if I suddenly had PF. The back slowly loosened up so that it was at 90% by the second loop. I learned to ignore the side stitch. I was able to pick up the pace a bit for the second loop and then again a bit more at the turnaround. One huge boost came somewhere around mile 5 when I heard someone yell something about BT. I looked up and running the other way on the outbound part of the course was a woman with a huge smile on her face looking at me. She yelled "GO BT!" again and her smile and enthusiasm and obvious joy at being out there got to me. The phrase "it's about what's possible" just popped into my head and I was able to put together a decent effort for the last mile enjoying what I was able to do, and not worrying about what I wasn't. That's what is great about this course is that you can see so many people while you're running, competitors and spectators alike. It can be a huge boost. The run itself is a social event for me. Which is probably an indicator that I need to speed things up. :) What would you do differently?: Don't know. I felt pretty bad coming out of T2 so what ever needs to change needs to happen before the run. Post race
Warm down: Hung out with family and friends. Enjoyed the weather and the company and the gifts of the day. Went home feeling just totally spent. It felt similar to having just done a HIM. What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm not sure. Not having a real taper? This is the state I'm supposed to be in at this point in my HIM training? I'm just slow? My legs just never felt strong. Aerobically I felt ok. Mentally I wanted to go faster particularly towards the end of the bike and on the entire run. I could talk and yell encouragement to people, but my legs just wouldn't turn over as fast as I wanted. It was very frustrating. Event comments: It's as good a local race as you're going to find. I really like the bike rack system score-this has come up with, every competitor gets the same amount of transition space. They've worked out the kinks from the corral swim starts and it went very smoothly. There were some comments about tight space where the run course enters and exits the street due to it being narrow and spectators crossing right there. Last updated: 2007-06-19 12:00 AM

None. Socialized. Just as I was getting ready to go into the water, people were called out.
