Swim
Comments: The swim was good. The water was warm, clean, weed free and no waves. The bouys were very small which was difficult as I am blind as a bat. I did surprisingly well keeping a decent course - swam a bit wide into the finish, however. Maybe I should heed all those rabid hockey parents who are who are screaming "LASIK, it's for you" when I am reffing hockey! Funny, I always have corrective eye wear on when I ref - wonder what they are talking about! What would you do differently?: I was happy with my swim. Transition 1
Comments: Put on shorts, shirt, shoes and eye wear. I was happy with my transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: The bike ride was very demoralizing. I came out of the swim well but got passed by the majority of the field. I had hoped to average 15 mph but that didn't happen. I made it up the hill ok and was comfortable with that - I just don't ride fast. My family had put up several signs for me along the hill which made me smile. The best was "Hurry up, there is someone at the top of the hill that wants to buy Thor!" Thor is our Great Pyr, a family addition made during a weak moment after 4 years of holding my ground on no more dogs. I rode so slow the buyer was long gone and yes, Thor was smiling and happy to see us when we got home. What would you do differently?: I need to spend alot more time riding bike. A road bike may help as well but that is not in the budget anytime soon. I just need to get faster on the bike I have and then if I ever get a road bike I will be flying. Transition 2
Comments: I was happy with the transition. I didn't think I would be able to do the run but I knew all those baseball families would be asking me about the race so I kept moving. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: This was tough - my legs felt like rubber. I had set a goal of 40 minutes for the run so I was happy. I had a strong kick which tells me I probably could have run a little faster but 4 miles is always my max run distance right now so I wasn't really sure. What would you do differently?: More biking followed by runs. Post race
Warm down: Drank some water, ate some oranges and bananas and walked around. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough time riding bike for sure and I probably could run more. I do not run or bike in the winter and primarily just swim. I feel good about what I did even though it was slow compared to the rest of the field. My goal was 1:50 and I met that so I guess I can't complain. Event comments: I liked the race but I don't have much to compare it too. PS - the baseball team didn't fare well but the boys had fun. We were in town for the weekend for our sons baseball tournament and as an after thought I signed up for the triathlon. It worked out great as it was convenient to our hotel.
Woke up and had a cup of coffee, some Naked brand juice and an oatmeal raisin performance bar. Wished my son good luck at his game that I was going to miss and peddled over to the race location.
This was my second triathlon and we had driven the race course the day before - my warm up was trying not to psych myself out and frequenting the port-o-potties - nerves!
