Pre-race routine:

Awake: 5:00
Nutrition: Powerbar, coffee
Arrive: 6:45

Went to bed at midnight, slept all night, woke up to the alarm.
Event warmup:

Stretched calves and hamstrings, swam for 15 minutes, ran along the beach for 5 minutes.
Swim
  • 08m 37s
  • 440 yards
  • 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first open water so I have nothing to compare to it. I was overly cautions, fear of drowning made me to conservative. I swam to close to shore. My goal was to swim the entire length but that was impossible because people were constantly stopped and standing in the way. I still beat my best 400 meter pool swim by 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Swim closer to the buoys!
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Time is an estimate because I forgot to click after transition. Smothest transition I've had yet. I ran from the water, most people were huffing and puffing. I was not passed.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 23m 30s
  • 10 miles
  • 25.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Not 10 miles. Felt like a machine at the beginning, slowed some at the end. I passed multitudes and was passed twice. It was interesting passing little kids with streamers while I was in the aero position. Cones were useless. Drafting was a joke.
What would you do differently?:

Change my age and sex so I could start with the first wave! I guess the overall winner didn't complain though, he was in my wave.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Smooth transition, no issues.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to plan on stretching in transition because I could feel the cramps coming.
Run
  • 15m 32s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I could feel the cramps at the beginning but thank goodness they never really developed. I just kept going and the feeling went away. It was hot and I never really hit my stride. I wasn't passed until 20 meters to go by someone in my age group no less. I never saw him coming or I would have finished stronger. I was about a minute off my goal.
What would you do differently?:

Look behind me, see whos on my tail.
