Swim
Comments: I made the ultimate mistake of swimming in my new wetsuit (bought late last year) without much OWS practice. I have only swam in the ocean once and nearby lake a handful of times. The arms always felt quite restrictive, but I have never completed any long distances. WELL, after the first 200 meters or so, my arms began to fatigue since I could not adequately life them out of the water. I resorted to the breaststroke for the next 300 or so meters and ultimately went back to the crawl for the final 200 meters. I have completed 2000+ meter swims a couple of times each week during my training. I had certainly done the training, but made a classic mistake of trying something for the first time at a race! What would you do differently?: I would have either not worn the wetsuit or have gotten one that fit. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was horrible. I had a tough time getting my wetsuit off, which may be due to how tight it is. I spent a lot of time "goofying around," and wasting time by putting on my HRM. What would you do differently?: Stick to the plan. I have been so slow in T1. Bike
Comments: I made up a lot of ground on the bike. I felt great and hydrated, which allowed me to kick it up a notch. I have not seen my official time yet, but I was able to keep my speed above 20 mph for much of the course. What would you do differently?: I would have worked harder on the hills, of which there were not many. I am still a little hesitant to be on my aero bars due to my fall earlier this spring. I could use some more time on them, as they would probably increase my speed. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went much more smoothly than T1. I was in and out quickly. What would you do differently?: Ride longer on the aero bars. Run
Comments: The run went great, I was able to keep a good pace. What would you do differently?: Not too much. Post race
Warm down: I did not do much of a warm down, just drank some water and ate a clif bar. What limited your ability to perform faster: The tight wetsuit really slowed me down on the swim. Event comments: This was a great race, not too many racers and a fantastic setting. The weather was perfect for the event. Lot and lots of very nice racers and spectators. Woke up at 5:00 AM and immediately ate a bowl of honey nut cheerios. Drank some gatorade/water. Drove 50 minutes to Lake Geneva. Absolutely beautiful morning.
I did not do too much of a warm up. They did not allow the racers to jump into the water after 6:30 am, so I was unable to do a little swimming. I did some stretching and light jogging. Downed a Gu about 20 minutes before the race started.
