Swim
Comments: Started in 5th wave, so i had some time to watch some of the strategy for the earlier waves. With the wading start, i had the chance to get in front and get ahead of most of the wave. I think there were maybe 30 in my group. small compared to the other groups. kept pace with three or four others in my group until we started passing people from the eariler waves. Had to breaststroke a couple of times to allow me to navigate through the mass. Kind of lost focus on my stroke and breathing at that point. I think I came out of the water at either #3 or #4 in my heat. What would you do differently?: keep focused on breathing - rhythm, etc. Need to get this time down to about 6:30/7:00 Transition 1
Comments: Passed a couple of people running up into transition area. racking the bike with the bars facing the boathouse was good intuition. Allowed me to get my helmet, glasses & belt on faster than running to the other side of the rack. probably saved me 10-20 seconds. Passed a couple of people because I decided to run barefoot with my shoes already clipped in. Mounted the bike fine. Made sure I was in a low gear and got up to about 18-20 mph before i got my feet fully strapped in. What would you do differently?: not much. Bike
Comments: Rode the course Friday evening and questioned how fast it might really be with all the turnarounds and corners. I think the corners and turnarounds may actually benefit some more seasoned riders. I personally didn't have a problem with them. Seemed that I passed quite a few people that took some of the corners really slow/cautiously. There were more than a few people that didn't seem to want to ride to the right. I buzzed a couple of people on their left when they wouldn't get over after I stated I was passing. Heard a couple of grumbles about it. What would you do differently?: I really have to get down to about 185lb's or 190 lb's. I think if i'm 20 lb's lighter and buy a pair of nice Zipps I can get my mph up to about 23mph (somewhere in the ballpark). Transition 2
Comments: Got my feet slipped out in time before dismount line. No problem getting off of the bike. Ran with the bike really well. No problem racking the bike, getting the helmet off or getting my running shoes on. Here is the thing that sucks. Leaving T2 I was in the lead of the Clydesdale division by 2 minutes. But we all know that the swim and bike are not the only events to complete. What would you do differently?: Nada. Run
Comments: As I said in the comments about my T2, I left T2 1st in the Clydesdales by 2:00 minutes. Five people passed me. If only I could do a 7 minute mile. Finished sixth in my group. Just can't keep up with faster runners. This is where I lost the race (at least in my division). What would you do differently?: Gotta lose weight. Gotta join a running club. Gotta get my 5k time down to about 25 or 26 minutes. Post race
Warm down: Stretched. Hip started really bothering me about 30 minutes following the race. Stayed by the finish line to check out the other Sprint finishers and watch the first olympic finishers. Grabbed some grub. Checked out the times on the truck. What limited your ability to perform faster: Again - if you have read any of my other posts - two things. First I'm 210 pounds - gotta lose weight. Second - my damn hip flexer hasn't really allowed me to really run the past two months. I was getting faster towards the end of May when I stopped training on the run leg. Event comments: I enjoy this race so much I just talked my wife into promising me she would agree to signup for it next year so we can do it together. I would highly recommend this race to beginners and veterans alike. Forgot - improved my time by 12 minutes from last years 1:30 (1:29:58). So even though I didn't reach my goal(s) of finishing first in my division or finishing in 1:10 i still knocked off a decent chunk of time. Nice improvement. Last updated: 2007-06-26 12:00 AM

Went to bed at 7 Sat. night. Woke up 3:15am this morning. Scarfed down a bagel w/ peanut butter and some Heed. Loaded the car and got to the park around 4:50. Setup transition, end of rack close to the swim in part of transition area. Got marked and had about a half hour to kill until warmup.
Grabbed the bike and went out for a 20 minute ride. Came back, grabbed my shoes and left for my run. Got back around 6:45 and streched until about 7 o'clock when i walked down to the swim start to get water time in before the 7:15 meeting. Drank some water. Swallowed some gel and was ready for the swim start.
