Overall Rank = 174/435
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 5/9
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5, started feeling the nerves kick up. Took a shower to fully wake myself up and get moving. Ate a Clif bar and a banana, double checked gear list.
Event warmup:

Arrived in Sunriver and there was frost on the ground from the night before. I should have brought a hoodie or something, I was freezing. After I set up my transition areas, I stretched a bit. Other than that I just tried to relax before getting my wetsuit on and hopping in the water.
Swim
  • 33m 37s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

I told myself I would start out slow and find a rhythm, but I still jumped out with an overaggressive pace. I felt what its like to be kicked over and over for the first time. Eventually I found an ok pace after the second buoy and actually started passing a few people towards the end. My biggest problem was probably maintaining a straight line. I also probably ran out of the water a little too hard as I was really dizzy going into T1.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to site better, work on breathing and improving stroke efficiency
Transition 1
  • 04m 25s
Comments:

I was dizzy out of the water, which meant it took longer to get my wetsuit off and put socks on over my wet feet. I also spent too many seconds trying to bag all my gear back up.
What would you do differently?:

Come out of the water a little slower, manage gear more efficiently, think about going sock-less on the bike
Bike
  • 1h 13m 30s
  • 25.2 miles
  • 20.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a decent bike leg, but my left leg starting cramping towards the end. It was a little weird since I felt like I actually drank too much Gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Improve aero position riding, figure out better nutritional intake, train harder
Transition 2
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

After I racked my bike and attempted to put my shoes on, my left hammy completely locked up. I had to sit in T2 for a couple of minutes before I was able to get up and even walk. My first mile or two of the run was also affected because the cramp kept coming back.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out what I need to do to avoid the cramps!
Run
  • 50m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

This should be my strongest leg, but that was somewhat negated by the cramp which started in T2. Luckily I was able to run negative splits into the finish after eventually getting over the cramp.
What would you do differently?:

Not cramp?
Post race
Event comments:

Overall the race turned out okay, considering it was my first. I learned a lot about where I can improve and about race management. Hopefully the next race will be a lot better and cramp free.
