Swim
Comments: this was probably my best swim in a tri. I almost had another melt down, but I relaxed and just swam. I even felt myself draft a few times. 2 years ago I "swam" this in 49 minutes (my first tri), and last year I did it in 36 minutes, so I am encouraged! What would you do differently?: More swimming practice, but I hate swimming. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition Bike
Comments: I was really happy with my ride. I've raced this course twice and I was prepared for the hills. I rode the entire ride on my big 54 tooth chainring and powered up the hills and relaxed on the descents. I was passed once by a 27 year old and I was tempted to hammer home, but at mile 25 I was way above my hoped for ride pace and thought I should just keep my pace steady... He didn't get too far ahead of me, but normally my competitive instincts would have forced me to race this guy... What would you do differently?: My nutrition on the bike could have been better... At mile 5 I ate a pack of Cliff shot blocks and I didn't drink anything until mile 20. After one sip I dropped my water bottle (the only one that I carried for the ride). With the heat and sun, I should have had more to drink. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty smooth. I had some issue putting on my racing flats. When I put my foot in my shoe the insole buckled... I had to take it off and fix the insole then put it back on. What would you do differently?: Socks? Run
Comments: I wanted to run a sub 40... I left transition and immediately got a side-stitch... same one that I got at BolderBoulder last month. It really hurt for the first 3 miles and I felt like I was having a horrible run. After the turn-a-round I picked it up some but still, I just didn't feel all that good. I was surprised to see my 40:19 10K split. If I had a clue I could have shaved those 20 secs. Anyway, this was a PB for a 10K in a triathlon... Also it was over a minute faster than last year. Hopefully I can get under 40 at the Boulder Peak in July. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure... perhaps swallowed too much lake water. I did feel the faint start of a cramp on the bike too. Post race
Warm down: None What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of swimming ability Event comments: I really like this race. The pond is kinda sketchy but its a fun, well run event. It doesn't sell out as quickly as the Boulder events so I can wait to the last minute to make a race/no race decision. Last updated: 2007-06-27 12:00 AM

OK, I was pretty organized for this race. Very unusual for me. I dropped my wife off at the Airport (Lilia's home in Russia for a month) and headed up to Loveland on Friday night to get my race packet... got home had the obligatory beer... I mean beers and organized my gear. Went to bed at midnight and woke up at 3AM. Had a PB&J with banana sandwich (I only had stale heels for my sandwich) but Ramone liked it just fine... My dog is cool... Loaded up the car and then me, Ramone and occasional BTer, SergeantVik headed up to Loveland. Got there at about 5:15 then went to set up my transition area. Ran into my buddy Hank Pool (15th place today) and my other friend Derek Kraus/55th place (both members of my Hood to Coast Relay Team).
Organized my area and then headed down to the beach.
Not much... It was chilly so I decided to acclimate in the pond. I swam about 100 meters and then got myself ready to go.
