Pre-race routine:

90 mile drive to race and listen as is our custom to The Cars CD

It was great to be able to race with my daughter Emily who is 12. Since I can't swim and shouldn't run, so she swam & ran. She hasn't done much training and hadn't done the distance in the run in 6+ months and only done pool swimming twice this year. But being young has many advantages.
Event warmup:

No time, helped Emily get in her wet suit.
Swim
  • 09m 14s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

From Emily: I was kind of nervous as I hadn't worn my wetsuit since August. I just followed people's bubbles and didn't sight as I can't see very well without my glasses.

I did some drafting, water got in my mouth, but felt fine.
What would you do differently?:

Try drafting more, wear a swim cap, practice.
Transition 1

Comments:

Mom was waiting for me ready to ride after I got off the beach. She took off timing chip and put it on her and off she went.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

I didn't really have a plan other to have fun and give it as much as I could. I started riding with large group of folks, many whom I passed in first 2 miles before hills. Horrible dead animal smell and glass right after first turn. I caught up with Kelly on the first hill, we chatted a little (I want her run speed) and it made the hill better.

As typical I get passed by thinner folks going up hills and then catch them going downhill. Happened with a few guys throughout the race.

I just went as hard as I could...my HR was at my max I do when I do a TT...power was good best NP for a tri 180. I was breathing very heavy like Shasha say 5 lound panting dogs.

Second loop I was a little slower and didn't catch the folks that passed me on the uphills; but they passed me early on the uphills and they were the skinny fast folks.

First loop NP 187, second loop 170 clearly need to work on pacing better. I think warming up would have helped.

Given where I started to be 7th women in off the bike was awesome.

2005 I did 23:20 for one loop or would have been 46:40 or slower for 2; 15.43
2006 I did 37:34 19.17
2007 34:26 20.91

Pace 1:37 0:00 3:15 min/mi
Hub Torque: 0 302 73 lb-in
Crank Torque: 0 520 155 lb-in

What would you do differently?:

Pace better...1st loop NP 187, second loop 170. I'm thinking going as hard as I can strategy needs some refining.

Don't wear Ommph tri shorts to race in, very sore & lost some skin in sensitive girl parts.
Transition 2
  • 00m 60s
Comments:

Ran the over the grass/sand which is a ways to get to timing mat. I had neglected to talk with Emily where to meet me, but there she was, took off my timing chip put it on her ankle and off she went.
What would you do differently?:

Plan better but worked out fine
Run
  • 30m 16s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Emily: The hills were hard. There were 4 hills and 2 downhills. A couple of guys passed me and they were nice. Then a whole pack of ladies started passing me it was crazy.

I saw Pam with about 1/2 mile to go and she said "Come on Emily Let's go".

I walked a little. I was able to sprint strong to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Train
Post race
Warm down:

After I finished I went over to run finish to watch folks finish and talked with Rob and Mark.

After race we chatted, packed up and waited for them to give out awards just because it is fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike accident 2.5 weeks ago, not warming up, weight going uphill.

For Emily she hadn't swam in her wetsuit since a race last August and only had done lap swimming twice this year. She hadn't run 3.2 miles since last Augsut and hasn't trained. Emily did a bunch of adult sprints last year and hopes to do some this summer. The relay worked out well as she is a faster swimmer/runner than I am. Plus how cool is it to do something fun like this with your kids!

She did awesome!

Event comments:

For $15 this is a great training race to get in an awesome workout always made better with so many BTers in attendance!

In the scheme of life this is one tri I'll always remember as doing onewith Emily rocks! Kevin had hoped to come but work interfered. If he had made it we would have some great pictures to help preserve the memories.
