![]() Swim
Comments: In the 50-59 age group, placed 7/8. First time I wore wet suit in race. Felt good, no restrictions. Started out slowly to get a feel if I would be able to breath OK and not get my HR too high. Took it easy to half way mark, stroke technique mediocre, then was getting stronger and put more effort into it and focussed more on stroke technique. Was passing some people after turning last buoy to swim in. Beat 13 people total. What would you do differently?: Nothing. This was my 1st long distance. Just continue learning to swim and improve my stroke technique for future races. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Was pleasantly surprised about T1 time. First time with wetsuit and had no idea how I would handle it. Had practiced at the lake, but that's not the same as a race day environment. What would you do differently?: Still need to practice running and jumping on bike. ![]() Bike
Comments: 1st place bike in my age group had 29.7 avg. speed. I beat 59 people on bike after being one of the last people leaving the water. In the 50-59 age group placed 3/8. Great course of rolling hills. Some effort required but no killer hills. Winds were with us almost the entire route except for Hwy 29 which was a great help. Had a Cliff Energy Gel turning onto 29. Very enjoyable ride. What would you do differently?: Need to get better getting onto bike. Save a few seconds. Continue training. Didn't get to bike much in June/July. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. Uneventful. What would you do differently?: Guess I could always move faster. I take my time. ![]() Run
Comments: In the 50-59 age group, placed 5/8. I knew I would have to walk because I have never run more than 2.5 km and even then have had to walk. Had a plan to pretend I was doing a training run and run 6' walk 20". Water was supposed to be every 1km and it takes me 6' to run 1km. However the water was not set up that way. Felt good off the bike and had run 20' with total of 1' walk (almost 4km mark) when outside of my right knee started to hurt (old problem) very painful. Worried I was going to have to walk the rest but continued on and started walking alot more. Decided to put more lean into run (chi running) which increases speed and pain in knee subsided. Once I hit 6 km decided I was going to run entire distance in and did. Ken came out onto dam and ran "home" with me. Finished pretty strong, all things considered. Walked close to 4 minutes total. What would you do differently?: Can't say it was below average for me because it wasn't. Actually felt really good on run until knee started to bother me. Wouldn't do anything differently. Just start a run training program and get some mileage under me. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Forgot to do stretches right away. Walked around. After race did an 11km easy bike ride to help rid lactic acid. Stretched at home, iced and then hot juniper bath finishing with a few minutes on the foam roller. What limited your ability to perform faster: Length of time doing the sport. As I train more and get more base mileage under me, should get faster. Very happy with 1st long distance event. 3rd place person was 26 seconds ahead of me. Event comments: There was NO food left when we got to food tent. Find the post race routine rather rushed with this series and not alot of focus put on participants other than to quickly get them on podium. Draw prizes and stuff in bags isn't as nice as other race series. Last updated: 2007-06-27 12:00 AM
