Pre-race routine:

Arrived 1/2 hour later than last year and got plenty of sleep the week before and 4-5 hours the night before . Drove to Convention Center at 5am ,parked car and did a loo run . Much nicer than portapotties in T1 . Buses were right out front CC . Got ride down to Venice . Set up T1 in a good spot , walked In and out a few times to remember it . walked over to the beach for National Anthem and watch Pros take off . That is Always cool !

Event warmup:

Thoughts : I was excited to be there . After all the training I did for the race . This is game day . I knew I needed to Relax to have a good swim , my last triathlon swim had been horrible and I had hyperventilated , The key was Relaxing in the water , have a good swim and turn up the gas once i hit the beach smoke the field on the bike . To help with this I
Got a great tip from Guy to increase my swim warm up time and effort to get into a grove.
Which i did . Our waves were delayed and it was warm . I ended Spending forty + minutes in the water My HR was very high waiting around on the beach but It dropped 20 when i went for a swim !!!
And The swim went much relatively well .

Comments:

It was a good race swim . I walked into the water and past a bunch of peeps who started swimming too early and dolphined dived all the waves . we had to get past 4 or 5 good breakers to exit the surf zone . I was Relaxed and smooth for most of the swim . At the First buoy there lots of contact and kicking. and arms flailing . ;) I got a little excited . But I relaxed thinking I would smoke them once I got out of the water . Sighting was a challenge I had to look up a lot to spot the buoys . You See , our caps were bright orange which made it a little confusing to see the buoys. Since they were also bright orange.
After a while of swimming around peeps I decided to do 10 strokes an look up. That helped me relax and I am sure it helped the speed as I was streamlined longer.
What would you do differently?:

Swim the course a week before to help with sighting.
Transition 1
  • 03m 25s
Comments:

Good T1 , ran across the large Transition area , Got all the stuff I wanted on board , wetsuit off , rinse eyes put on glasses , wash feet , put on socks and shoes , take gels and pack bag with everything afterwards.
What would you do differently?:

Nada 1st of 13 in the group
Picked up a 2 nd place position with two good transitions
Bike
  • 1h 07m 50s
  • 22 miles
  • 19.46 mile/hr
Comments:

kept a high cadence on the flats and on the climbs changing gears a lot , got into the aerobars for all the downhills and tried to rest a little and take in some fluids . Felt like a great breakthough training ride. Pushed Confortably hard the whole way. With the Same effort at Zuma next week I should PR the bike course.

i was riding besides PJOinSM on Venice Fairfax and Wilshire but lost him after the long climb up to Hollywood Blvd . Our wave was small and mainly female the only males being Clydesdale or Clydesdale +. I wanted to hang on , catch up and pass later.
But it never happened on the bike .
Hahaha !

took a gel around mile 5 and finished the water and gatorade I brought by the end of the ride . I took the freebie Gatorade at Mile 10 but never needed it . Is this A sign of improved fitness ?

What would you do differently?:

Great ride , came off the bike ready to run
Transition 2
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

1st of 13 in the group. Moved up a position (from 3rd to 2nd) with two good transition :)
Ran the whole thing in my shoes . Picked up some overall spots :)

  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

My run was good and done with an even effort but not as fast as I done in the past . Its reflective of my slower 5K times this year. I can tell i missed the track speed work . I Felt as if i could have run longer. which bodes well for the upcoming Olympic distance .

I saw PJOinSM again running near the top of the hill at The Disney concert hall but he was too far ahead for me to make a go of it .
Hahaha !

total calorie burned including long warmup in ocean : 3000
What would you do differently?:

Not enough speed work runs since Marathon .
Need to do the track workouts if I want to get better.
Improved Running is the key.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a Great Massage !!! And some chow , water . The best was the watermelon and bananas ...
Got my gear and T1 bag back to the car changed and came back to see the results and awards ceremony .
Clydesdale Sprint results were Not posted anywhere ... Hum .... I thought my time was good for a placing. So i hung around ...

So I waited through the awards ceremony as peeps were dismantling their expo displays and leaving ,
Our category was announced and the fifth place times was slower than mine so I knew I placed . I moved closer to the stage . Fourth place was slower than me. Then they announced 3rd place with 2:03 and I moved closer to the stage knowing I would 2nd or 1 st . Turns out I was 2nd.
It was nice to get up there and get my picture taken on the stage. Then the announcer asked if I like the clydesdale category !!! Does an Irishman like alcool ? Do Canadians like Hockey ? What can i answer to that question? I replied it gave me a chance to place where I am usually not in the running for awards .

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I miss the track speed work and I need to scale back the extra carboloading.

Event comments:

Good race , I had a good time . I am looking forward to doing it again .
The swim in and out are too close to each other , this resulted in collisions and confusion in many of the Olympic waves. And delays in starting the sprint waves . Swim start need to be moved one lifeguard station north.

Entrance to T1 from the beach was better this year
Transition 2 was set up better than in past years. Everyone had to run through the entire area and exit at the back. It saved me about a minute.
