Pre-race routine:

Up at dawn. Coffee, muffin and power bar.
Event warmup:

Mild stretching. Nothing else. Difficult to warm up in bare feet!
Swim
  • 21m 1s
  • 1000 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very rough start to the swim. Not used to wearing a wetsuit. Panicked for the first 1/8 mile. Managed to calm down for the rest of the swim. Poor sighting. I wandered around the course a lot!
What would you do differently?:

Practise in my wetsuit more before the event and work on my sighting.
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

My wetsuit got caught on the timing chip strap. Aside from that, it was OK.
What would you do differently?:

Practise running with my bike.
Bike
  • 45m 51s
  • 14.42 miles
  • 18.87 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was described as 'rolling hills'. Having training in Chicago, those rolling hills felt very hilly! Lots of ups and downs. But it wasn't too hard.
What would you do differently?:

Look at the course profile before the event and get some hill practise in.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

There's a lot to be said for speed laces and elastic laces. I wasted at least 30 seconds fiddling with my laces. Aside from that, it was a pretty smooth transition. Oh, and I forgot to take off my biking shorts before I started running. Only noticed about 2 miles into the run. Must have been in the zone???
What would you do differently?:

Swap my regular laces to tri speed laces. Maybe change from biking shorts to tri shorts
Run
  • 31m 4s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

A lot hillier than I had expected. Again, coming from Chicago, I'm not used to anything other than flat, flat, flat. I was expecting a hilly bike, but not a hilly run. It was a little tough going but a great course. A lot of fun running through the trees and dirt. Excellent.
What would you do differently?:

Read more race reports pre-race so that I don't get any surprises during the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching.

Event comments:

Absolutely beautiful course. Lots of fun!
