![]() Swim
Comments: Swim start was somewhat strange...basically it was an announcer saying "if you can finish the swim in 5 minutes, start now", "if you can finish the swim in 6 minutes, start now". I started when he got to 11 minutes. You had to walk across the timing mat then walk down a steep concrete ramp, then walk along rocks and boulders to the middle of the river then start swimming....So....that felt like it took 2 minutes off my swim time...Also, I stubbed my toe on one of the boulders... What would you do differently?: nothing ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Very long transition run from swim exit to bike. The rack in the transition area was one looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnng rack. Running barefoot on the bumpy asphalt was hard on the footsies...and now I notice my toe hurts... What would you do differently?: Rack my bike next to the swim exit and run with the bike shoes on to the bike start... ![]() Bike
Comments: Bike felt pretty good. Toe hurt a little. Wasn't able to get cliff shots down until about 3 miles into ride. What would you do differently?: Drink more ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Well since I racked near the bike start/exit, didn't have far to go. But that meant having a longer run in transition to get to the run start What would you do differently?: Rack and set up near swim exit/run start ![]() Run
Comments: I was really hoping to rip it up on the run. However, my toe is now really bothering me, which kept me from running like the bionic woman. Was now feeling like just finish the dang thing. What would you do differently?: Don't stub toe while wading to the swim start. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Sweet leaf tea lemonade and a breakfast taco! Just wandered around until the transition area opened back up. So I can make my 1.25 mile hike back to the truck with my throbbing toe. What limited your ability to perform faster: STUPID TOE Event comments: Overall the atmosphere is very good. It is a fun race, especially for first timers. Bring a flashlight because it is very dark almost until 6:30am (race starts at 7am). More volunteers would be nice at 5:30-6:30 am since it is so dark and you kinda guessed as to where to go. Alarm beeped at 3:58 am--holy moly....dressed, poured the coffee, made the pb&j sandwich and piled up the truck and pulled out by 4:25am...50 minute drive to Blanco.
Arrived at the park by 5:30am...parked in BFE and then had a mile hike to packet pickup (even had to carry the bike across a low water crossing). Then had a 1/4 mile hike to transition area...that was enough warm up...but I saw a shooting star along the way (it was way dark and I forgot a flashlight, which made the hike that much more exciting....)
