Pre-race routine:

We slept horribly the night before. Seems like everyone in the neighborhood was lighting off fireworks. The noise was bad enough, but one of our dogs is super skittish around loud noises. So, she was constantly sratching to get into the bedroom. When we finally let her in, she kept trying to climb into bed with us. Constantly kicking a 55lbs dog out of your bed is a wonderful way to spend an evening.

Got up around 5:45 and we weren't sure we were even going to do the race. It was pooring down rain and we were both exhausted. Since we had pre-registered and didn't want to lose our entry fee we decided to drive up there. Picked up our chips and numbers and since it was still raining just hung out under a tree for awhile.
Event warmup:

Normal warmup. Easy running and drills followed by some light stretching, followed by some more easy running with a few pickups thrown in.

Comments:

The rain stopped about a half hour before the race, but that just made incredibly humid. Even after warming up, I felt lethargic and tight; so I did not have high hopes for this day.

Gun went off, took about thirty seconds to get the timing mat. Crossed the mat and everyone around me just kept walking. Ugh, major pet-peeve of my mine. If you are going to start walkers and runners at the same time, make sure the walkers know to line up in the back. Weeved my way through that and eventually found some running room. Ran the first hill well and did the first mile in 6:53. Wanted to take in some water at the aid station but it was packed and I did not want to wait.

Was starting to feel good and was on PR pace so just decided to go for it. Heart rate really started to creep up during the second climb but I still hit mile two at 13:53--still under PR pace.

About three minutes after mile two, I started to fizzle and was really hurting. The humitidy and climbs had taken their toll and my heart rate was really elevated now. Knew if I could make it to the the last quater mile I would still have a chance since it is downhill from there. At this point, I just gritted my teeth and tried to hang on. I passed a few people here but got passed by a lot more.

Hit the final downhill and knew I would be real close to a PR. Gave it everything I had. A bunch of people flew by me in the final 100 yards but I just didn't have anything left. Crossed the line and looked at my watch--a new PR by 18 seconds!!!

What would you do differently?:

Line up a little closer to the front. Having to weeve through walkers probably cost me a few more seconds.
Post race
Warm down:

Poored some water on me and walked back to the finish line to cheer Brandy on (she was disappointed in her race, but she still beat her time from last year). We turned in our chips, grabbed some bars and coffee and cheered on the rest of the finishers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing at all. I just finished my final training push for an Olympic Triathlon (my 'A' race for the summer) so I was not exactly rested. This is a tough course for us (we don't normally run on hills) so I am more than happy about a 5K PR.

Event comments:

Overall a good race. They did not have enough volunteers at packet pickup so it started a little late. They need to start the walkers after the runners or remind walkers to line up in the back of the pack.
