Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Checked in, complained about the rain. Got body marked, complained about the rain. Ran a short bit to warm up, complained about the rain.
Swim
  • 23m 14s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in first wave. This was my first open water swim. Started in the back of the pack near the middle. Was completely overwhelmed by all of the action. Got hit in the face right off the bat. Choked several times on water in the first 25 meters. Heart rate and breathing shot through the roof. Treaded water for a time to let the crowd thin out. Started again, taking in lots of water. Rolled over onto my back and calmed myself down and reminded myself to run my own race. Turned over and started to front crawl at my own pace. Next wave started to pass me about 1/4 of the way into the race. It was neat to see the front women flying through the water. Rounded the buoys well and felt pretty good with the rest of my swim. As soom as I could stood up to run out of the lake. Time included run into transition area.
What would you do differently?:

More swim training. More open water swim training. Run my own race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Cap and goggles off before I was into transition area. Sock and shoes on. Helmet on. Helmet off. Shirt on. Helmet back on. Glasses on and then off due to rain. Run out of transition. Was really surprised to see Jeremy's bike still racked. Thought he would be way ahead of me. He came in as I was finishing getting ready to leave.
What would you do differently?:

Practiced transitions.
Bike
  • 49m 35s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 15.04 mile/hr
Comments:

Came out of transistion. Had a little trouble getting shoes in cages. After that got up to speed well. Took first lap a little cautiosly to get the feel for the course. Nice climb as you exited the park at 70th. Downhill on Pioneers got some good speed. Then back up the hill to the turn onto 56th. Then another downhill with some nice speed to a flat area and short uphill for the turn onto Normal. Gradual uphill to the turn into the park with a downhill through the park. Passed quite a few people on the first lap. Passed by some with some really hot bikes. Gave it all I had past my cheering section through the park. Lap two is where things really fell apart. Was starting to push my pace a little more since I was familiar with the course. After about a half a lap my race fell apart. I went through a water puddle and then felt myself slow dramatically and the rear end start to wobble. I looked back and my back tire was flat. Pulled over and tried to reinflate it. It wouldn't take any air. Ended up changeing out the tube. Not sure how long it took, probably 5-10 minutes. It was pretty discouraging to see all the bikes go by while I was changing my tire. Got it changed and aired up and continued the race. Hard to get back into the rhythm since it was all uphill for almost half of a lap. Third lap went as good as could be expected.
What would you do differently?:

Not get flat tire.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Went pretty good. Took two attempts to get the bike racked good. Helmet off and took a quick drink of gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Practice.
Run
  • 29m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt a little heavy coming off of the bike. Tried to keep a nice pace for the run. My main objective was not to walk during the run. Tried to enjoy the lake and all of the cheering fans. Passed Jeremy on his way back in at about mile 1.25, he was looking strong. Pushed up the hill to the turnaround. Felt better on the way back to the finish line. Passed a few people on the run but was passed by a few too. Passed my family close to the finish line and then jumped onto the finishing mat.
What would you do differently?:

More brick workouts. Legs were getting wore out on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and talked with my cheering section. Went to eat a good post race buffet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Flat tire and training. Now that I have a feeling for the race, I can train more and better.

Event comments:

Great race. Seemed very organized with everything starting right on time. Plenty of volunteers.
