Swim
Comments: The swim waves were compressed in time, and my wave was large. I got beat up pretty badly, not only in the first two hundred yards, but also periodically from there. It took me a while to reassure myself that I was going to be alright, and that I needed to take it easy breathing. Lake clarity was awful, but that's to be expected with a flooded lake still sitting well above it's usual shorelines. What would you do differently?: Practice more open water sighting, start further to the side and further back as I don't belong anywhere near the front. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time with this, and I'm not sure why. Had a devil of a time getting clipped in. What would you do differently?: Have more of a sense of urgency. Bike
Comments: I know I didn't train properly for this Oly, so I can't be disappointed in my bike leg. I don't think I even bothered to bike more than 19 or so miles at any one time in 2008, and I've put in very few miles total. Someone was looking out for me though. I dismounted at T2 and took maybe three running steps into the area when I heard *PFFFFT*, there blows my front tire. What would you do differently?: TITS. Transition 2
Comments: Kind of a lazy transition again. What would you do differently?: Have more of a sense of urgency. Run
Comments: Lack of training bit me here again, but that's not surprising. What was surprising was my need for two emergency bathroom stops. That ate up a few minutes, kind of killing my usual best of the disciplines. I had a lot of thigh cramping too, so I take that as an indicator that I had a poor hydration strategy. What would you do differently?: Train and hydrate. Post race
Warm down: Enjoyed the post race festivities, and ate lots of good food. What limited your ability to perform faster: A demanding career, and great family for which I refuse to sacrifice too much time of our lives. Event comments: I think it's incredible that the organizers were able to pull this off, considering the fact that they pulled out a new course and support within a two week period (thanks to all our wonderful flooding). Sure, there were lots of hiccups and less than ideal course features (two transition sites, many U-turns, etc), but there's no way I can fault all of the wonderful work and hours the organizers and volunteers put in to actually give us the tri. Up at 3:45, usual morning routine (albeit a bit earlier than usual), then off the the shuttle buses. Smooth process with plenty of buses to get us there on time.
Not much, put on my wetsuit after setting up transition. The announcer made it sound like there was no swim warm-up, and I found out too late that people were doing it anyway.
