Swim
Comments: Decided to take my good ole time at the swim this time - the race is never won or lost with the swim. Made good progress. Passed quite a few people in the couple of waves before me. Didn't get kicked, punched or scratched or even swallow any salt water once the entire swim. Kept a really, intentionally slow rhythm and tried to conserve energy. It worked. Felt really good getting out of the water. Swim time from 2006 - 12:16. Swim time from 2007 (without really pushing myself or racing) - 10:49. What would you do differently?: Nothing for this race. The swim conditions were much easier to swim in this year than they were last year in 2006 (i remember 8 ft high waves and a strong current). I'll do better next year by continuing my training after NJ State. Transition 1
Comments: Tried to sit down right out of the water and peel my suit off for the first time. Thought it worked out pretty good. Allowed me to conserve a little more energy running up to the transition area through the soft sand. No socks for me - this is a sprint distance isn't it? As always - I have my shoes already clipped into my pedals. I run through the transition area to the bike mount line barefoot. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Get to race earlier for a better location in transition. Bike
Comments: Much better layout with this year's course. Got a little congested at times but I found myself going pretty hard on the straightaways. Cudos for North Wildwood PD for putting the radar machine out so we could tell how fast we were going. Bike time for 2006 - 33:40 (19.6mph) Bike time for this year 2007 - 28:57 (22.7mph or 20.7 - the autocalc above is coming out different than Compuscore's pace). What would you do differently?: Nothing. As I said in my race reports prior - I'll lose 15 or 20 lb's and train on a lot more hills next year. My goal is 23mph before I get an aero wheelset. Transition 2
Comments: Slipped my feet out of my shoes pretty early on before the bike dismount line and ran barefoot to the transition area. Racked my bike, grabbed my visor and sneaks and took off. Ran with my sneaks until I got down to the water's edge. Once I determined the sand would be hard enough I put on my sneaks. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Get to race earlier for a better location in transition. Run
Comments: The course just killed me last year. Walked the first 1.5 miles last year in 2006. Promised myself that it wouldn't happen this year. Kept my promise. Run time from 2006 - 40:59 (13:13 pace) - go ahead laugh it up Run time from this year 2007 - 30:34 (9:52 pace) What would you do differently?: Training. Don't get hurt anytime throughout the year. Post race
Warm down: Couple of slow jogs along the boardwalk. Walked around looking for my wife and son. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training since NJ State Triathlon way back on July 22nd. Really figured my season was over after that race (especially with the amount of rest and sleep I'm not getting since my son was born August 9th) and started weight training. I wasn't gunning for any personal records today. Event comments: Of all the races I've done in the past two years - I rank this one just below NJ State on the basis that the course and conditions are always changing. This race is really the toughest race that I've done so far. Maybe not this year's race but last year's was really the hardest race I entered. Overall I finished this race faster than I did Avalon Islandman too. I was happy about that. Total time for 2006 - 1:31:52 Time for this year 2007 - 1:13:28 Almost 19 minutes faster than my time last year. Last updated: 2007-07-05 12:00 AM

Instead of driving the 2 hours from my house Saturday morning, my wife, son and I crashed in Atlantic City at the Hilton where my sister had gotten a room. This totally threw any "routine" I used before any other races out the window. Didn't get a bagel to eat until we stopped at the Split Second just before the toll plaza on the AC Expressway. Didn't get much sleep because my son kept waking up every couple of hours the night before. Didn't hit the Garden State Parkway until about 6:30am (30 minute drive to North Wildwood).
Never got a chance. Since I didn't pre-register (my wife just had our first child two weeks ago and I didn't want to commit) I had to stop by the Matador Motel at 7:15 am and register. I happened to be the LAST post registration entrant of the morning. Just BARELY had enough time to get my stuff into transition (there were no spots at the racks left by now - so I racked my bike against a wooden pier), grab my wetsuit, swimcap and goggles and make it down to the water's edge to watch the first wave. Thankfully all post-registration entries were in the last & final wave.
